The 5 apps you need to start 2016 on the right note

As January is fast approaching, year-long slates will be swept clean and replaced by the expectation of a New Year’s resolution. With 2016 comes the assumption that you will exercise more, purge your life of nonvital items and vow to keep many other self-promises you will likely not uphold. But luckily, as far as ambitious resolutions go, there are apps for that.

New Year's Resolution: Get motivated

App: Mibi

Everyone likes a little competition, and Mibi is the ultimate app for challenges. The app allows users to create competitive and goal-based challenges with their friends—with any type of activity. For example, using Mibi, you can challenge your friends to a fitness contest, in which the app would sync up to participants’ FitBits, Jawbones and smartphones in order to track exercise regimens.

New Year's Resolution: Manage money more responsibly

App: LearnVest

will help you save your money this year. The company is a subscription-based financial program designed to help people invest their money. The platform fuses a dedicated planner with technology to encourage affordable and accessible financial planning.

New Year's Resolution: Get fit

App: Peloton Cycling

Giving SoulCycle a run for its money,

Our headquarters is located in Hudson Yards on Manhattan's West Side, between Hell's Kitchen and Chelsea. This vibrant area is home to incredible cuisine, culture, and community, and is not far from a number of train lines and Citi Bikes.
brings spin class to your home. This startup lets you access high-energy cycling workouts instantly using immersive and socially connected technology. Peloton’s services will help you learn the basics of cycling, schedule classes, connect with fellow Peloton users as your ride for an enhanced “class” feel and utilize a lineup of on-demand classes. If you don’t have to leave the house, there’s no excuse for not getting in shape this year.

New Year's Resolution: Be healthier

App: WayBetter

In attempts to help you kick bad habits and develop a healthy way of living,

uses unique methodology to improve your lifestyle choices. The startup forces you to monetarily commit to a health goal through a weekly Kickstarter campaign. Once you’ve put down money to reach a goal, you’ll find hard cash is an extremely effective motivator. WayBetter’s current offerings include a campaign called “DietBet,” which makes participants wage money to diet. In the future, WayBetter will incorporate “FitBet,” “SleepBet,” and “CigaBet” into its repertoire.

New Year's Resolution: Read more

App: Glose

is a social reader for ebooks. The platform allows users to read from Glose’s large collection of books on any device and engage with other readers in the process. While you read a book, you can share your annotations with fellow readers and friends in order to make reading more fun, analytical and social.
