Harvard is coming to New York.

On Monday, Harvard Business School (HBS) announced the opening of the HBS Startup Studio in New York City in conjunction with the school’s Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship.

The Startup Studio will function as a coworking space for HBS alumni who are honing their businesses as entrepreneurs in New York. This initiative joins the expansive list of entrepreneurial programs that accompany a Harvard MBA, such as the Harvard Innovation Lab (i-lab), which has spawned successful New York-based startups such as

Two blocks up from Battery Park, Alfred is no more than a ten-minute walk to water south, east, and west. Our office is easy to get to with many subway lines, ferries, and the PATH within a short walk.
 and  .

To use the facilitiy, an entrepreneur must be a HBS alumni working in the Greater New York City area or a team must have at least one founder who graduated from HBS. Teams apply to gain access to The Studio, and must have more than $500,000 in seed funding and less than seven employees. Teams can work in The Studio for up to eighteen months. Nine startups will initially use the space, which includes Archway Health

,  , Greenshield Show Score, Summus and Tootelage. Alumni who choose to use The Startup Studio will pay a $400 per desk fee.

By bringing Harvard Business School alumni together in a physical space, The Startup Studio hopes to foster connections among graduates who have migrated from Cambridge, MA and into New York City’s burgeoning tech scene.

As many HBS alumni have already found great success in New York, this unprecedented off-campus space will be a useful gathering point in an industry that thrives on collaboration.

“HBS alumni in New York have been at the forefront of the surge in startups there with companies such as Birchbox, Blue Apron, Rent the Runway, Oscar, and Hello Alfred, to name a few,” said Jodi Gernon (MBA 1991), director of the Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship, in a statement. “For years, many of them have returned to HBS to interact, seek advice, and network with others facing similar challenges. Now they can do that by staying in New York and making use of our Startup Studio.”

Harvard has appointed Avani Patel, Founder and CEO of TrendSeeder, as the The Studio’s director. The facility will be temporarily located at 1460 Broadway in midtown Manhattan before it moves to more permanent location in the spring.
