These 5 NYC startups are pioneering the 3D printing industry

Touted as the technology that will bring about the third industrial revolution, 3D printing is a big deal. The industry has carved itself a space in mass production, despite its traditionally high costs and slow pace. In New York City, a number of startups have begun experimenting in the 3D printing industry, allowing people to customize everything from food to jewelry to shoes to homes. Here are some of the most interesting 3D printing startups to emerge out of NYC.

Shapeways has turned 3D printing unique creations into a mass-manufacturing process. The company allows users to upload a customized design to the service, upon which Shapeways will ship the final product within a few days.

The Brooklyn-based 3D printing industry leader was one one of the first companies to offer affordable and accessible 3D printers. They also run MakerBot labs, an experimental platform for engineers and developers to create, build, customize, and collaborate on MakerBot 3D printing solutions.

 

Sols are 3D-printed orthotics. Founded in 2013, the company wants to customize orthotics in an affordable and accessible way. The company is currently working with 1,487 doctors and has already shipped 11,233 pairs.

 

 

Trove is experimenting with the rising trinket economy and is 3D-printing jewelry. The startup allows consumers to customize, try on and buy 3D-printed jewelry. Once customers decide on a design, the company sends a free prototype, and once they find the right fit, their jewelry will be 3D printed in sterling silver or 14k gold.

 

 

nTopology was founded to help engineers make better 3D printed parts. The company’s software allows users to quickly design complex lattice structures that are strong, light and easy to manufacture, aiming to harness the power of additive manufacturing. 

 


Voodoo Manufacturing’s 3D printer factory helps companies bridge the gap between their first prototype and high-volume 3D printing. To date, the startup has worked with companies among the likes of Intel, Universal Studios, SyFy Channel, Viacom, Autodesk and Mattel.
