While the majority of formal learning is done early in life, it can often feel like you're not expanding your skill set after you graduate.

Luckily, a number of tech companies in New York exist to combat this feeling and want to help you to continuously learn no matter how old you are.

Skillshare is an online learning community that helps people master real-world skills from project-based classes. Users get unlimited access to over 150,000 classes which run the gamut from ink drawing techniques to street photography to HTML tutorials. To date, the company has garnered over two million students and aims to help close the professional skills gap by providing universal access to high-quality learning. Check out some of Skillshare’s class offerings here.

Ryan Bubinksi and Zach Sims co-founded Codecademy in 2011 after coming up with an initial concept for a learning network that connected students with other students. After growing through Y Combinator, the company morphed into Codecademy, which is an online coding school bringing digital skills to the masses—for free. When you sign up for Codecademy, the platform prompts you to create a “path,” which is essentially a customized curriculum. From there, you can dictate your own coding education and take interactive, online classes in everything from basic HTML to Ruby on Rails. Codecademy also leverages an online network of peers to help users learn coding concepts, providing constant feedback and articles to accelerate individual learning.

General Assembly offers full-time, immersive programs that aim to help students hone modern professional skills. In a bootcamp style format, students can take long-form courses, short-form classes and workshops on everything from web development and user experience design, to business fundamentals, to data science, to product management. Students can either take classes in-person at one of General Assembly’s many global campuses, or take them online.

2U's core mission is to build online degree programs as good as, or better than, traditional on-campus programs at top universities. The company partners with universities and colleges to deliver a top-notch digital education, providing schools with the comprehensive operating infrastructure to attract, enroll, educate and support students — globally.
