A healthy employee is a happy employee. As such, it’s important for startups to establish wellness programs early on to retain productive employees through benefits pertaining to food, exercise and a solid work-life balance.

While it can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle in New York (from its lack of nature to a plethora of pizza options), these companies try to foster a health-first mentality among their employees through the health perks they offer.

What they do: Noom is a mobile health company combatting lifestyle-induced pre-chronic and chronic diseases. Noom’s platform pairs artificial intelligence with dedicated human coaches to deliver successful behavior change programs that scale.

Health perks: Noom takes its employees' health very seriously. Every day, the company’s personal chef, ‘Chef Jane,’ prepares lunch with healthy options conducive to a balanced diet. The company also makes sure its employees stay active by bringing in a yoga instructor each week so team members can stretch away any stressors.

What they do: Thrive Global provides science-based solutions to alleviate stress and enhance productivity for companies and individuals alike.

Health perks: With a ‘human-centric’ culture at its core, the company touts a range of wellness benefits. A career at Thrive Global also allows you to reach hundreds of thousands of workers and make a difference in their well-being.

What they do: PulsePoint is a global programmatic technology company on a mission to redefine digital advertising. The company’s platform distributes ads to the right consumers, aiming to create real connections across the internet.

Health perks: PulsePoint is big on employee health, especially when it comes to exercise. The company offers a corporate discount to local gyms, free group exercise classes and company sponsored sports teams including basketball, volleyball, soccer and dodgeball.

What they do: FreshDirect is changing the way you shop for ingredients. Long gone are the days of waiting in a long grocery story line — FreshDirect lets you order your groceries in the same way you’d order books off of Amazon. You tell the company what time you want your food delivered and it’ll show up at your door.

Health perks: In addition to a 20 percent discount on FreshDirect (so you’ll be eating a ton of healthy food), the company also offers a number of wellness programs to its employees. These include weekly meditation, yoga, Zumba and monthly manicures and massages.
