Role 

To support our growing team, we are looking for an engineer to work with our DevOps & App Platform team. You’re the right fit if you’re the best and there’s not a problem you can’t solve and ultimately love to code.

We need an experienced engineer who has a strong development background, specifically around web technologies, but also can apply this expertise in a DevOps style environment. We’re looking for self-motivated and self-driven engineers who are passionate about what they do and love technology. We need an engineer that is always developing solutions with scalability, availability, supportability, and security in mind and seeks to understand how the applications are running on the application platform we support.

You will be working on the DevOps and App Platform team building systems in the cloud for applications to run on. These systems support the future development of the client and planner experiences for Northwestern Mutual. The team is located in Milwaukee or New York but has the opportunity to travel across campuses.

Your general milestones are as follows:

  • Within the first month – while working with engineers on the teams, be able to jump head-first into enhancing existing platform capabilities and ask the appropriate questions / do the appropriate research to identify the general functions and behaviors of the system
  • Within three months – have proficient knowledge of the platform and be able to take the reins around backlog items and appropriately develop and implement new platform capabilities
  • Within six to nine months – be able to navigate the full stack of the platform and supporting components, contributing directly to engineering discussions that affect the current and future state of the applications. Essentially, contributing to the team at your full capacity

Competencies 

  • Fast learner and self-starter. The people you will work with are incredibly kind and extremely willing to share knowledge and a helping hand, but you have to be willing to take ownership of the outlined goals and make things happen
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision, yet actively interact with other team members in person or over the Internet (chat, video conference, email)
  • Work collaboratively on creative solutions with engineers, product managers, and designers across teams
  • Bring new ideas and new ways of solving problems to the team

Skills

  • Experience with application architecture for developing cloud native applications specifically microservices
  • AWS experience. AWS certificates preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of API management and the value proposition it provides
  • Proponent of supporting development patterns and best practices across a development community
  • Experience with Linux and interest in working with open source technologies 
  • Developing experience in one of the following: Java, JavaScript or Go
  • Hands on work with Docker and containerization including Docker orchestration frameworks, specifically Kubernetes
  • Knowledge of GIT, source code management, continuous integration, and continuous delivery
