BuzzFeed is looking for experienced data scientists with proven track records of solving problems, driving growth, and making data-driven decisions. The right candidates for this role balance deep technical expertise with the knowledge that sometimes finding the right question to ask is the hardest part of a problem. We are looking for people with tremendous curiosity about their domains and the follow through to get to the bottom of important questions.
Data scientists at BuzzFeed are versatile — our team members find the right solution to fit the problem and know that the right solution might be the one that doesn’t use machine learning. They are intensely skeptical of data and know what it can and cannot tell you. They are able to take a complex problem and distill it down to core questions, and are always looking for ways to step back and look for process improvements. Finally, we think an effective data science team is diverse: it’s made up of people with varying backgrounds, experiences, and skill sets, who have the opportunity to lean into their strengths as well as develop new ones.
Responsibilities
- Collect, interpret, and disseminate data to allow for rapid product and content experimentation.
- Create learning loops in which user experiences generate insights used to drive growth and engagement across different platforms.
- Develop and foster services that will use data to create personalized and optimized experiences.
- Develop KPIs and measures of success in a cross-platform world.
- Support development of data tools, such as dashboards and A/B testing platforms.
- Communicate complex ideas in a clear, precise, yet accessible way to product, engineering, and editorial teams.
Requirements
- 1+ years of industry experience deriving insights from large datasets with appropriate statistical techniques.
- Experience with media or consumer facing tech a plus.
- Expertise in both relational and nonrelational databases.
- Proficiency with analysis tools like R or Pandas and at least one scripting language (preferably Python).
