SeatGeek believes live events are powerful experiences that unite humans. With our technological savvy and fan-first attitude we're simplifying and modernizing the ticketing industry.
We are looking for a Lead Data Scientist (open to varying levels of experience) to join SeatGeek's Marketplace Analytics team, focusing on inventory, seller, and fee pricing workstreams.
You will join a high-performing team that will be the go-to partner on experimentation and insights generation for SeatGeek's Marketplace team. Your efforts will drive improvements in growth and profitability through analysis of SeatGeek's seller incentive and fee pricing strategies. As a senior contributor, you will be tasked with helping to prioritize SeatGeek's Marketplace Business roadmap by building a data-driven understanding of supply and consumer price elasticities through experimentation and predictive modeling. Underpinning this work will be a collaboration with Analytics Engineering to implement performant data models and model runs, ensuring analysis-friendly data in production. Finally, you will partner closely with other leaders on the Data team at SeatGeek to improve the organization's capabilities around modeling, experimentation, causal inference, and data visualization. Accompanying this broad set of responsibilities will be exposure to the highest levels of leadership at the company, and the opportunity to work at the nexus of data science, mixed methods research, and economics at the most innovative company in the live event space.
What you'll do

  • Develop research questions and undertake data exploration to understand how we can develop our supply acquisition and pricing strategies to bring SeatGeek customers even greater value.
  • Design sound experiments on pricing and effectiveness, analyze and interpret the results, and drive action off of them in partnership with business stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to develop production-level decision models to improve SeatGeek's pricing.
  • Define, evaluate, and monitor key metrics, understanding the root causes of changes, and feeding them back to business stakeholders to action on.
  • Contribute to the development of the Marketplace Analytics function and the wider analytics community at SeatGeek with programming and problem-solving best practices.
  • Work closely with the Analytics Engineering team to build lasting, analysis-friendly data models, and performant batch models that run in production.
  • Mentor and coach other data scientists, with the potential for growth into a management role over the medium-term conditional on performance

Who you are
You have experience working on open-ended projects, and the ability to come up with creative, elegant solutions to complex issues. Experience with specific tools is less important than experience and drive, but at a minimum we would expect:

  • 6+ years of relevant applied experience with a degree or higher in economics, psychology, computer science, statistics, or mathematics or another quantitative discipline.
  • Expertise with at least one scripting language (ideally Python, though R is acceptable).
  • Experienced with analytics & visualization tools (SQL, Looker, ggplot/matplotlib or equivalent).
  • Experienced performing analysis with large datasets.
  • A strong statistical understanding of causal inference and online testing methodologies.
  • An independent thinker, able to work autonomously, capable of taking on loosely defined problems and translating complex thinking into practical application for diverse audiences.
  • A natural communicator who values building strong relationships with colleagues and partners and enjoys mentoring and teaching others.

The tools we use
We do research and development work in a custom environment optimized for repeatability and collaboration. You absolutely do not need experience with all of these, but we thought you might be curious.

  • Languages: Python for web services and product devlopment, R for analysis and prototyping
  • Datastores: MySQL, Redshift, Elasticsearch, Redis
  • Monitoring: Graphite/StatsD
  • Version control: Git

An Insider's view of SeatGeek

What are some social events your company does?

The importance of gathering is baked into our DNA at SeatGeek! We always take time to celebrate milestones together, whether in person or virtually, and, while we throw an amazing End of Year party, my favorite events are a little more personal! We empower employees to create their own social events from fitness classes to crafting or or tv nights!

Workplace & People Programs Manager

What projects are you most excited about?

An ongoing project I am excited about is the redesign of one of the core flows in our app. It is a high impact, cross functional initiative and I love how we’ve been able to implement a new technical foundation, introduce new features, and improve the user experience. I’m looking forward to the initial release and gathering insights from consumers!

How do you empower your team to be more creative?

We encourage teams to solve problems and create delightful customer experiences, not implement pre-defined solutions. Our teams leverage research/data to understand our customers needs and behaviors, but we also believe that giving teams the space to be creative during a discovery phase opens the possibilities of what they can come up with.
