 We are looking for a developer to help build out The Times community platform. The community platform encompasses the frontend and backend of our custom commenting system and our internal comment moderation tool. While many other publishers are shutting down their comments sections, we are investing in enriching and scaling our system through product enhancements and experimenting with technology to do automatic moderation. We’re looking for a strong technical leader to help build great products and robust and extensible systems that support a vibrant community for our readers and over 1.5 million commenters.

The ideal candidate would have the following technical qualifications:

  • Experience building web applications and API’s
  • Experience working with a variety of web frameworks and libraries
  • Familiarity with deploying, scaling and monitoring a production application
  • Proficiency in Go or an enthusiasm to learn it
  • Experience working with medium-sized data
  • Interest and curiosity about technology, web development, user experience and machine learning

Any experience with Node or React would be extra great, but by no means required. We’d also love to hear about any experience you have contributing to open source projects.

You will work alongside a group of talented people with a diverse set of backgrounds, many of them different from your own. The ideal candidate will view this as a unique opportunity to learn. Our goal is not only to build a state-of-the-art community platform, but to build tools that journalists can use to easily engage with our readers. This task requires working closely with designers, sitting in on user testing sessions and thinking creatively about how technology and AI can be used to improve the relationship between our journalists and our subscribers.
