We’re a venture-backed company focused on giving people productive, professional space when and where they need it. We’re growing extremely quickly and have huge ambitions, and we want you to help us get there!

THE ROLE

Breather is looking for a Director of Design to lead its global Design Build team, reporting to the VP of Real Estate. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced professional to shape and develop Breather’s design approach and lead a world class creative team. The ideal candidate is both creative and analytical, with strong interior architecture experience, knowledge of construction methodologies, and a successful track record of managing project teams in fast-paced organizations. This position is based in New York City, working with a team based in Montreal, London, and San Francisco.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all facets of interior design and commercial office construction for Breather’s 10-city location network (and growing!); from design development, space planning, documentation, and pre-construction, through the bid process, construction, construction administration, and launch.
  • Establish direction and strategy for the Design Build team, refining and developing Breather’s interior design philosophy with a focus on aesthetics and functionality.
  • Lead and grow a distributed, multidisciplinary team of interior designers, construction project managers, and others, in close collaboration with our Purchasing department. Develop organizational structures and growth plans that can support Breather’s global expansion, and foster a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture that will enable Breather to continue to attract top tier talent.
  • Collaborate with Breather’s Real Estate and Finance teams to develop and manage budgets and strategic plans.
  • Develop frameworks, systems, and processes for:
    • Efficient and effective space planning and space programming, including incorporating and managing functional, project, and code requirements.
    • Documenting and maintaining construction standards and specifications across multiple geographies and property types.
    • FF&E management, including developing seasonal FF&E catalogs and programs and custom furniture items.
    • Project budgeting, cost estimating, reporting and scheduling.
    • Selection and management of external architect, contractors, and consultant.
    • The efficient management of legacy locations, including planning for cost-effective retrofits to increase quality and functionality, and working with the operations team to establish comprehensive processes for maintenance and repairs.
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with internal teams including marketing, operations, business development / sales, and product / technology to advance product development and develop brand standards.
  • Build value-add partnerships with architects, designers, furniture suppliers, and others.
  • Advocate for and advance Breather as a thought leader in workplace design and innovation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 8+ years practical experience in workplace, commercial interior, and/or high-end hospitality interior design. Licensed interior architect or architect strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with ADA, zoning, and building codes.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, Sketchup, Adobe Photoshop & Indesign and MS Office.
  • Ability to motivate and coach a team, set and communicate goals, provide feedback and delegate.
  • High EQ and strong communication skills.
