Director, Developer Tools

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Director of Developer Tools is a strategic thinker and member of the technology leadership team. Your teams will be focused on improving how our customers interact with the infrastructure DigitalOcean provides -- through UIs, APIs and integrations with tools and platforms. Working closely with the design team you are striving to lower the friction in their workflows. How do teams build, test, deploy, monitor, debug, scale, and reason about their applications in the cloud? How do developers really think, and how is that changing as new technologies and capabilities become more mainstream? Heady stuff!
What You'll Be Doing:
- Working in close partnership with Product Management, Design and the core product pillars (compute, network and storage) develop a short and long term vision for the Developer Tools business. Translate the vision into an actionable roadmap of products, projects and outcomes.
- Develop quarterly goals and objectives that help keep your teams aligned with the vision and higher-level company goals.
- Through direct and indirect methods see to the delivery of your organization’s projects, initiatives and commitments
- Make large prioritization decisions, and tradeoffs between schedule, scope, cost
- Attract, develop and retain the people required to deliver your plan.
- Actively coach and develop the managers and technical leaders within your organization, and create a healthy culture that supports delivery over the long term
- Command the economics tied to your organization. This includes ROI considerations, revenue impact, margin, opex and capex budgets.
- Actively participate in the yearly and quarterly budget process and make strategic and tactical decisions to manage to these budgets
- Be an active communicator within DigitalOcean in written and spoken form. Routinely present at company AMAs.
- As a director you will be expected to drive a company initiative that does not fit nicely in a box, or has impact beyond your immediate organization

- A history of building and delivering applications in the cloud and the scars to prove it.
- Real miles with CI, CD, micro-services and highly-available, large-scale systems.
- A decent background in identity and access management systems.
- Enough architecture and engineering chops to hold your teams to high standards.
- A strong, pragmatic leader, that values both delivery speed and code/systems quality.
- An open mind and healthy intuition about emerging development trends.
- A analytical mind that seeks out the data to back up their intuition.
- A history of building and leading high performing distributed teams.
- A good systems thinker, who understands complex organisations, systems and how to work effectively in a complex environment.
- A leader comfortable with ambiguity, and leading teams through it.
- A good cross functional collaborator.
- An effective communicator in written and spoken forms.
- A leader comfortable with build, buy, partner decisions.
