Common is hiring a Director of Procurement to lead and execute the sourcing of our furniture and equipment within all homes. Common furnishes from a wide range of sources and vendors to create beautiful spaces that our members love. Our Director of Procurement will be responsible for delivering the best experience for our members whilst meeting target margins. This is a unique opportunity for an ambitious candidate to be involved in strategic development and to have a day to day impact on growth at an exciting start up.

Common brings home to life by creating, designing and operating all-inclusive shared homes for those who live life in common. We combine community, convenience, and flexibility to make living with others a joy instead of a chore. Headquartered in New York, Common was founded by General Assembly co-founder Brad Hargreaves in early 2015.

Common partners with real estate owners and developers throughout the US to create community-minded homes. By doing this, we’re addressing the fundamental supply and demand issues that underlie housing in major cities today. Common opened its doors to its first building in Brooklyn in October 2015.


About the Role

Common is creating a new user experience as a leading innovator in residential living. It is our goal to deliver a great living experience, whilst providing excellent value to our members. The Director of Procurement will be responsible for delivering this value by ensuring Common is purchasing the best furniture and equipment at the lowest possible price.

Our Director of Procurement will undertake a full review of our procurement strategies and choices and critically examine for cost benefit opportunities and optimization. They will undertake thorough research and evaluation processes in selecting the best products for use and purchasing, including tender analysis. They will lead key negotiations, and ultimately manage the ongoing relationships. This person should feel comfortable producing and enforcing procurement contracts and evaluating and managing for risk. This role will involve creating large or complex orders and tracking these from creation to final delivery. As a fast growing start up, our procurement timelines are short and our deadlines are critical. The right person for this role will be comfortable working in this environment, and will perform well.

Common has an opportunity to not only partner with a wide range of vendors, from established brands to venture-backed startups, but to also explore custom made furniture pieces to address our needs. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate relevant industry experience with direct sourcing furniture items from manufacturers and handling the logistics of delivery.

This is an important role within the company. The Director of Procurement will have the experience and ability to define their own objectives and deliver results in line with the company goals. This person will enhance our member's experience and have a great understanding of our overall mission. We expect the Director of Procurement to learn, understand, and apply our brand standards autonomously while vetting partners. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional to take a leadership role at Common.
Requirements
  • You have at least 5 years of procurement, logistics or inventory management experience.
  • You have a good understanding of furniture manufacturing.
  • You are a strong negotiator and can demonstrate examples of success.
  • You can evaluate supplier and contract risk and manage for it.
  • You have a solid grasp of financial and business metrics.
  • You are detail orientated and have extremely strong excel skills.
  • You are highly quantitative and can intuitively understand how to measure the ROI of our relationships.
  • You understand business operations and are able to think through the implementation of the company’s partnerships.
  • You are able to react quickly and operate on short procurement timelines.
  • You are creative and can think outside the box about purchasing choices.
  • You have an appreciation for brand, design, and user experience.
  • You are comfortable online and offline.
  • You know how to ask for help when you need it.
