We're looking for an entrepreneurial executive responsible for leading and building out the Ads Business for Stack Overflow and the entire Stack Exchange Network. This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer. The primary purpose of the position is to run and grow the Ads Business as a strategic complement to Stack Overflow communities that ultimately works to drive user engagement via our relationship with the brands advertising on our sites. This role offers a wide range of autonomy and authority covering the following responsibilities:

  • Maximize revenue of Ad Sales Team and facilitate customer success on the client side
  • Collaborate with Marketing, Product, Engineering, and Community to define capabilities, products and services that empower brands to respectfully engage our users
  • Leverage proprietary data and targeting resources to maximum client and business benefit
  • Interact with key customers and act as the face of the Ads Business both internal and external to the company
  • Manage the Ad Business from a people, process and product perspective including investments into the business and the operating budget toward specific profit and loss objectives
  • Collect and report on customer best practices, product usage, and product quality
  • Identify, track and report on success metrics, both pertaining to clients and the internal teams
  • Provide a platform for integration and support of the advertising inventory needs of the other Stack Overflow business units like Talent and Enterprise.

  • Good understanding of Ad Sales business & Agency Channel
  • A good ‘people person’ who able to work collaboratively across teams
  • Able to leverage existing teams and build new teams to extend client solutions

Key Objectives:

  • Evolve the business from mainly display ads that out click to 3rd party web sites into a strategic business with a series of ads products that maintains engagement of our users within our ecosystem.
  • Evolve from pure product advertising into a full funnel suite of products that facilitates everything from top of funnel branding all the way down to direct on-site conversions.
  • Raise average deal size by building an account based model to:
    • Increase penetration within Blue Chip Companies
    • Better predict long term client value based on current client base, funding, etc.
    • Shift sales efforts to focus on most valuable and strategic clients
  • Expand product and services offered to support lifecycle of client products
  • Build Customer Success model of best practices & case studies on how to market to developers and engage our community
  • Understand, Map and Formalize the entire sales process

What you'll need to have:

  • You’re a leader, a collaborator, a data-absorber and you thrive on making an impact.
  • Use your extensive experience and judgment to plan and achieve business goals with a wide degree of creativity and latitude
  • Prior experience managing a business team or business unit at the P&L level
  • Experience with leading and directing the work of others including training and mentorship of direct reports
  • Experience working across departments and ability to see big picture to trade off both long term strategic objectives and nearer term tactics
  • Knowing when to enforce policy, when to change policy, and when to work between the lines
  • Strong analytical and writing skills with product management experience desired
  • Strong presentation skills and experience with public speaking
  • Experience with data analysis and reporting using MS-Excel, Salesforce and BI Tools
  • Requires at least 10 years of experience, ideally in online digital media
  • 4-year degree or equivalent
