The Company

Gimlet Media tells stories through audio. Our roster of podcasts includes newly-launched, critically-acclaimed shows like Homecoming, Heavyweight, and Science Vs. We’re also home to perennial favorites Reply All and StartUp. We are looking for ambitious, curious, talented, and kind people to join our team.

We’re brought together by the desire to make amazing things, and a shared belief in working hard, embracing creativity, and supporting one another. At Gimlet, good ideas matter more than titles. People who tackle problems with creative solutions, and who love the energy of a collaborative, team-oriented creative process thrive here.

The Show

We’re going back to one of the biggest, most tumultuous and well-documented moments in American history, and turning the story on its head. (We can’t tell you which one, but we will soon.) This new show will tell the stories that were left out of the official version, the ones you won’t see in documentaries or movies. Hosted by two major talents in audio storytelling, the show will guide listeners through a series of mind-bending, poignant, and gut-wrenching episodes about war, race, gender, spies, music, betrayal, and hot-air balloons. And it will connect these underreported moments from the past to the raucous political moment we’re living in right now.

The Job

As one of the early producers on this new show, you’ll have a unique opportunity to help shape its vision and execution. You’ll have an active role in every part of the production process including pitching stories, gathering tape, writing scripts and participating in intensive group edits. You’ll work with outside experts and researchers, and help coordinate sometimes-intense amounts of information and fact checking. We’re looking for someone with an insatiable curiosity, who is passionate about finding great stories in the smallest of details, and crafting those stories in a collaborative environment. Someone who is organized, but willing to go off-script when the story leads them down a rabbit hole. And we’re looking for someone who can bring new ideas to the table when it comes to telling stories about the past.

What You’ll Do

  • Scour research and archives for story ideas
  • Book, plan, and edit interviews with the show’s host
  • Gather field and archival audio
  • Structure and write show segments and episodes
  • Direct host voicing and edit tracks
  • Coordinate external help (researchers, transcribers, etc.)

What You Have

  • A strong sense of what makes a good story and how to structure it
  • 2+ years in narrative production (audio, film, print)
  • Experience tracking down leads and booking guests
  • Pro Tools or other editing software experience a plus, though not required
  • A willingness to step in where needed, to learn new skills, to work with a team

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible role based in our Brooklyn, NY offices.

What You Should Submit

Please send a resume, cover letter, and short answers (250 words or less) to these two questions:

  • Tell us about your favorite moment from a podcast you recently listened to. What makes that moment compelling?
  • Pick a moment from pre-1950s American history that you think has significant reverberations in the present: describe it, tell us why that story is interesting to you, and how you’d want to tell it.

Please also include 2-3 links to examples of past work if you have them.

This posting will close Monday, April 10th at 5pm Eastern.
