Product Engineers at Codecademy build tools to streamline the curriculum authoring process, improve our interactive Learning Environment, and increase user engagement through features like user profiles, progress visibility, and collaboration.
Responsibilities:
  • Take part in every aspect of the software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, design review, implementation, testing, and optimization
  • Write well structured code that is idiomatic, reusable, and easy to understand
What we're looking for:
  • 3+ years of full-stack web development experience using frameworks like Ruby on Rails or equivalent (Django, Express)
  • Ability to empathize and collaborate with a diverse range of peers
  • Strong problem solving skills; Ability to find the practical, effective solution for a difficult problem
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
Bonus:
  • Real-world experience building applications with Ruby on Rails
  • Experience working with NoSQL databases (MongoDB preferably)
  • Experience working in the JavaScript ecosystem using prominent libraries and frameworks like React or Angular

Megan O’Neill’s UX career started back when she was in marketing at Codecademy. An engineer put out a call on Slack for help writing an error message, and she jumped at the chance to pitch in. “It might sound silly, but it was just so much fun,” she said. After 15 years in marketing, she’d been contemplating a career move, but wasn’t sure if it was the right time to share her interest in switching roles. “If it didn’t work out, I wasn’t sure what would happen. But in the end, my interest was met with a lot of support — and even excitement,” she said. Now, she’s the team’s first UX writer.

Ankit Rakha’s team has made great strides in using data and AI to set up a diversity, equity and inclusion analytics dashboard; create a data guild; open an experimentation forum; and incorporate enterprise tooling and machine learning platforms. He likes to think of the data science and engineering teams as a sort of “think tank” for Codecademy, providing insights, helping business partners find solutions and articulating needs: “We believe that data is our users’ voice.”
