Working at Button is one of the most fun, fulfilling, and challenging experiences you'll have - and it's one of the reasons why we were voted the best place to work in NYC.
As our first Software Engineer and Tech Lead dedicated to our data platform you will be responsible for designing, building and scaling our data infrastructure. You will be the bridge between both our platform engineering and data science teams - owning the data stack as well as aggregating, analyzing, predicting, and visualizing data and performance. As an early employee, you will have a foundational role in shaping intent-based experiences seen by millions of users.
AS A DATA PLATFORM ENGINEER & TECH LEAD YOU WILL:
  • Deploy platforms, services, abstractions, and frameworks that allow the data scientists to conceive of, develop, and deploy their ideas with autonomy
  • Create infrastructure and abstractions that can enable anyone (engineer or data scientist) to create a scalable ETL pipeline for whatever the purpose is: metrics, analysis, machine learning, dashboard visualizations
  • Make intuitive decisions about what services, frameworks, and capabilities need to be in place before they are desperately needed
  • Design, build, and scale our data infrastructureEnable our data science team to do their jobs more effectively!
  • Build and maintain a data collection system that robustly extracts relevant data from multiple sources and data stores
  • Architect reliable batch and real-time ETL pipelines using modern big data technologies
  • Work closely with engineers and data scientists to design and implement on-the-fly A/B and multivariate testing of consumer/client facing product features
  • Work closely with analysts and data scientists to develop data-driven dashboards and insights for internal/external dissemination.
WE LOOK FOR TEAMMATES WHO HAVE:
  • Experience designing and scaling data infrastructure, models, and pipelines
  • Familiarity with a variety of data infrastructure, such as Hadoop, Hive, Spark
  • Open and active in sharing knowledge as well as excellent communication skills
  • Programming experience in one or more application or systems languages
  • The ability to manage a project from inception to completion
  • Expert critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills
YOU WILL WORK WITH:
  • Sean Summers, Data Scientist. Sean works on all things data at Button, developing the machine learning algorithms that drive Button's contextual matching engine. Born and raised in California, Sean loves to travel the world with his family, often to Switzerland where he lived for 7 years before being deported.
  • Liwei Mao, Data Analyst. Liwei builds data pipelines, design controlled product experiments, and creates beautiful visualizations to present data collected at Button. She spends her free time searching for delicious food and reading in the sun.
  • Bennett Hiles, Engineer. Bennett’s a platform engineer at Button, spending his time building APIs and backend services. He’s a fan programming languages, databases, delicious food, and NHL 94 (on Super NES). He’s a newbie to NYC (been here for a year) so he’s still exploring the town and taking it all in.
  • Mikey Wakerly, CTO. Mikey is Button’s Hawaiian shirt enthusiast and Chief Technology Officer. Founder of Kegbot, a former Googler, and San Francisco transplant, he loves mountain biking, karaoke and logic games.

Our team also values and celebrates our diverse backgrounds. Being open about who we are and what we do allows us to do the best work of our lives. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
