There’s a lot of prestige that comes with landing a job in New York City, but it’s not everyone’s dream home.

Luckily, you can still include NYC work experience on your resume without actually having to live there, through online businesses and freelance opportunities. The compensation offered by these remote companies depends on your education, experience, and perseverance.

However, the pay for these jobs can be just as good as the pay for an in-office career, if not better. There are few monetary benefits associated with this style of working, but there are more non-material perks such as choosing your own hours, working from anywhere, and taking vacations when you like.

If this sounds like something you might enjoy, here are a few NYC-based remote job opportunities.

1. Writing

From blogging to drafting white papers, copywriting is something you can do from anywhere. What’s more, you can easily make $15 an hour at starting pay, with plenty of opportunities for advancement if you work on specializing in a particular niche, such as SEO or e-book ghostwriting.

2. Translation

Know more than one language well? NYC is one of the most diverse cities in the US, which means that the demand for remote translators, either for international business or non-English-speaking American citizens, is high.

3. SEO

There are many facets to search engine optimization (SEO), ranging from advertisements, copywriting, and social media marketing, to web design and graphic design. Most online establishments are looking to include SEO in their business strategy, and all the tasks in the field of SEO can be performed from your home.

4. Social Media Marketing

All you need is an Internet connection, some kind of technological device, and a background in digital marketing to manage a company’s social media campaigns anywhere else in the world.

5. Web Development

You don’t even need a formal education to learn website development, though it certainly helps. Through online tutorials and a little perseverance, you can acquire a skill that will enable you to work anywhere, any time.

6. Graphic Design

Graphic design is used in every operation in some way or another, and NYC-based startups and large corporations alike are always looking to hire graphic design freelancers to stay within budget.

7. Consulting

If you fancy yourself an expert in a particular industry, you might as well capitalize on that knowledge by offering consulting services. Even New York City entrepreneurs need the help of a consultant now and then.

8. IT

From offering online tech support to finding the best cloud storage, IT gurus have their pick in the mecca of NYC-based tech jobs.

9. Telepharmacist

If you want a job that offers great pay (median salary between $105,000 and $118,00), but with excellent flexibility, try telepharmacy. This approach allows the pharmacist to work offsite, reviewing and filling prescriptions that are delivered by courier to the central pharmacy where the patient can arrange pickup. Though it’s a fairly new practice, it’s gaining popularity, particularly in NYC where innovative ideas and top-notch health care are the norm.

10. Medical Transcriptionist

When some of the finest NYC doctors in the world voice-record patient notes and information, they need someone to transcribe them. With a little schooling, that could be you.

11. Online Instructor

The option of teaching post-secondary or even grad school classes generally becomes available after you’ve had a lot of experience in the field. If you’re ready to extricate yourself from the busy corporate life, but not ready to stop working altogether, try your hand at teaching.

12. Virtual Tax Preparers

For a large number of Americans, taxes remain a foreign language. If you’re an accountant or tax person, try looking for a job with an online tax service.

13. Customer Service Representatives

Though many customer service reps are confined to a busy office, many enjoy the freedom of working from home. Nearly every company needs customer service, and if you can handle that type of work, you can do it from anywhere you like.

14. Teleradiologist

Want to make somewhere between $100,000 and $400,000 annually? Try teleradiology, a career that entails viewing digitally transmitted patient images remotely, and videoconferencing with primary caregivers to discuss the findings of X-rays.

15. Virtual Assistance

As a virtual assistance representative, you’ll wear many hats. This job will have you teaching people how to do things as simple as answering a Skype phone call to others as complex as coding a website. If your technical skillsets are many, this kind of consulting work might make working from home an easy move for you.

16. Programming and Coding

With ample training and practice, your programming and coding skills will be good enough that you can work on any website from anywhere. If the flexibility and challenging work isn’t enough to tempt you, perhaps the median pay range between $80,000 and $130,000 will.

17. Blogging

Instead of writing content for someone else, try your hand at creating your own blog. This gives you a totally creative way to share your thoughts and ideas all around the world. Most bloggers generate their income through affiliate links and advertisements.

18. Investment Trading

NYC is the home of Wall Street as well as a large hub for the foreign exchange market (forex). Whether you specialize in making investments or have a knack for trading stocks, you can work up a nice living by capitalizing on these markets. Of course this type of trading requires a hefty amount of capital at start-up and a thorough understanding of the financial markets.

19. Affiliate Marketing

If you have your own website, newsletter, or blog, you can make money through affiliate marketing. This involves making recommendations to customers or followers through advertisements and paid links, then receiving a commission each time that leads to a conversion.

20. E-commerce Startup

NYC is a hub of startup activity, particularly in the e-commerce sector. Whether you start your own business or seek employment with a startup company, it can be a comfortable job that allows you to play off the NYC market without actually living there.
