These 5 NYC startups are waging a war on winter

As you prepare to bundle up and settle in for the chilly season, technology is here to make those first dreary months of the year more enjoyable. We’ve rounded up our favorite tech companies to help you get cozy in New York City this winter, no matter what the weather brings.

The Vane uniquely blends weather and fashion. The platform provides recommendations on what to wear each day based on the forecast and helps people pack clothes for climate-changing travels. Think meteorology meets blogging.

Casper, the sleep startup sweeping New York City by storm, touts the most comfortable mattress in town. For days you want to stay under the covers rather than brace the cold outdoors, and Casper beds promise a “just right” level of comfort along with a sleek latex and memory foam design. The kicker? You don’t even need to leave the house to get a Casper bed. The mattresses are delivered directly to customers’ homes in an impossibly small box, with a 100-day in-home trial and 10-year warranty.

Unfortunately, sickness tends to plague the winter months. If you’re hit with a particularly rough cold this season, ZocDoc will help you instantly book doctor appointments online and receive reminders for preventative checkups. Overall, ZocDoc’s online platform provides seamless accessibility and is free for all patients.

Heat Seek is helping New York get warm. While over half of all residential buildings registered at least one heat complaint last winter, the company uses IoT temperature sensors to help tenants monitor their heat. HeatSeek sensors take temperature readings once an hour, log violations on their servers and provide an objective temperature log for New York tenants to use in housing disputes with landlords who skimp on heat.

While sports like hockey and skiing go hand in hand with high costs, Sideline Swap wants to make sports equipment more affordable. The peer-to-peer platform helps all winter sports lovers find lightly-used gear at up to 80 percent off the retail cost.
