“Don’t mention the election!: Adventures in presenting data

When is it: May 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Who’s it for: Anyone interested in data, or how it can be used in everyday life.

What’s going on: Alan Smith, the Data Visualization Editor at the Financial Times, will be giving a talk about how data visualizations can give perspective to debate and decision making.

Fun bits: Smith has been appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by the queen. That’s not quite as cool as being a knight, but it’s close.

Flashpoint New York Demo Day

When is it: May 3rd at 10 a.m.

Who’s it for: People interested in an early look at companies with the potential to become the next big thing.

What’s going on: Flashpoint’s current batch of startups will be showcasing their work.

Fun bits: Flashpoint works with startups to utilize the methods of behavioral economics and startup engineering. While I'm not really sure what that means, I intend to figure it out before tomorrow's event.

May NY Tech Meetup and Afterparty

When is it: May 3rd at 7 p.m.

Who’s it for: Techies looking to meet other techies.

What’s going on: There’ll be networking, live demos and drinks. The companies showcasing their work are pretty interesting this month — you can find a full list of them here

Fun bits: Drinks with techies!

Tech Talks & Hiring with BuzzFeed, Vimeo, Jet.com & More

When is it: May 6 at 10 a.m.

Who’s it for: People looking for a job in tech, or just interested in meeting some of the city’s coolest tech startups.

What’s going on: Think of the event kind of like a one-day tech conference mixed with a hiring fair.

Fun bits: Some big-people from some of NYC’s biggest tech startups will be in attendance.

Get UNSTUCK with Startup Institute

When is it: May 7th at 10 a.m.

Who’s it for: Anyone who wants to plan out their career, or move sideways into a position they actually like.

What’s going on: The Startup Institute is putting on a one-day workshop to help people design a deliberate career path. Most of us don't even consider such a thing possible, but it turns out you can be strategic with your career path.

Fun bits: By the end of the day you should have a pretty good idea of how to make the next step in your career.
