New York City is considered to be a global economic powerhouse and the financial capital of the world, so it should come to no surprise that tech companies are thriving in the “Silicon Valley of the East”. Just as the tech industry is booming in New York, the real estate side of things is seeing just as much, if not, more growth. Microdesk, a technology consultancy for the architecture, engineering, construction and owner/operator (AECO) industry has experienced this growth firsthand. This has put Microdesk in a unique position of being at the forefront of two booming industries, while helping to solve clients’ construction and building design challenges.
The boom that both the tech and AECO industry have experienced in New York, has impacted Microdesk’s growth as it keeps up to ensure it plays an integral part of the city’s boom. In September 2016, Microdesk relocated its New York City office from 330 7th Ave. in Midtown Manhattan to 5 Penn Plaza. The tech company’s new office reflects Microdesk’s growth, due to being at the intersection of where technology and AECO projects meet.
“Our move to 5 Penn Plaza symbolizes the rapid growth and evolution of the AECO industry and Microdesk,” says Michael DeLacey, Principal at Microdesk. “We are excited to serve our clients from a new innovative space that will enable us to be even more creative in solving clients’ complex building project challenges.”
Microdesk’s office move symbolizes the company’s own evolution, but also how technology is shaping the way we plan, design, and construct buildings. The new office space isn’t only meant to serve as an incubator of innovation for the company’s talent, but also to enhance the company’s culture and the opportunities it provides its employees.
Unique Opportunities in the AECO Industry
In order to attract and retain the best talent, Microdesk has put an emphasis on providing unique opportunities and experiences for its employees. From working with Columbia University on the Manhattanville Project in New York City, to developing the revolutionary BIM to Asset Management solution, ModelStream, Microdesk staff have the opportunity to touch every aspect of the AECO industry. The company has found that by providing its employees unique opportunities to excel and stretch themselves, it has helped the company drive innovation from within. As the AECO industry continues to evolve through technology, Microdesk has focused on being able to provide off-the-beaten-path career opportunities for people in the industry.
When Kevin Phillips, Director of Consulting in Chicago, had first learned about the unique opportunities at Microdesk he knew that it had the potential to be a career defining move.
“Microdesk is a good choice for someone that has a passion for the AECO industry and wants to have a well-rounded career,” says Kevin. “The company offers unique job opportunities, which opens the door for employees to work with different firms on a wide variety of unique and monumental projects. In my role, I am able to work on complex problems and come up with interesting solutions. This is definitely not your typical AECO company, which makes for a great experience.”
A Culture of Giving Back
Microdesk continuously gives employees the opportunity to dedicate time to give back to communities in need. One prime example of this is Microdesk Cares, which gives employees the opportunity to work on unique projects with communities from around the world. Be it training AECO staff for projects in Africa or collaborating on design projects for a community in need in Latin America, Microdesk is always looking for new and different ways to give back. This has become engrained in the company’s culture and has given employees new experiences to grow.
“Microdesk is a huge supporter of its local community,” says Melina Taylor, Client Resource Manager in Nashua. “We are donating constantly, volunteering, for a lot of different local events and charities. It’s one of my favorite things about Microdesk, because it shows leadership hasn’t lost its principle of helping thy neighbor.”
Career Growth and New Experiences
As Microdesk continues to grow, so do the opportunities for its staff. For example, Microdesk’s expansion to London, has given employees the ability to continue working for the company but in a completely different city and country. Cody Soodeen, Architecture Solutions Specialist, recently moved from the New York City office to the London office to work with client Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF). With so many different opportunities available and the ability to work in new places with new clients, this has helped to keep Microdesk staff fulfilled and challenged.
“In the time that I have been here I have seen several people who have been promoted within,” says Kristen Halligan, Account Executive in San Francisco. “There are always new opportunities to learn the latest and greatest new technologies in the industry with a career at Microdesk.”
