Deputy Editor, VICE Magazine
OVERVIEW
VICE Magazine is looking for a full-time deputy editor to join our team. The editor will be expected to commission and edit articles from freelancers and act as proxy for the editor-in-chief when needed. The editor will contribute to the development of the magazine globally, working with the editor-in-chief, senior photo editor, as well as the video, PR, marketing, and social media teams when needed. This person should have a sharp editorial eye, be well versed in news and culture, and have an insatiable drive for finding unique ways to talk about important issues. This is a fast-paced work environment; the ability to work quickly under pressure while maintaining sky-high editorial standards is essential.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- To assist the editor-in-chief on the development of world class content
- To generate, commission, and execute content at a high standard
- To help build a network of new writers
- To help establish and maintain relationships with VICE magazine contributors
- To commission the front and back sections of the magazine under the supervision of the editor-in-chief
- To generate story ideas
- Act as editor-in-chief’s proxy when needed
- Act as an editorial resource for other members of the team
- Manage fact-checkers
- Help interview new hires when needed
- General help with award season submissions as needed
OTHER
- General administrative duties as required
- Occasional writing as needed
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field
- 4+ years experience as an editor at a notable publication or high-volume website covering news and/or culture
- Knowledge of the current global media environment and the VICE brand
- Ability to multitask and perform well under pressure
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with all social media platforms, CMS, and Photoshop
