BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed is the world’s leading independent digital media and tech company, with a cross-platform news and entertainment network that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally and spreads Joy and Truth across the internet.

Our portfolio of brands are household names that people rely on to inform and entertain, including: BuzzFeed, BuzzFeed News, Tasty, Nifty, Bring Me, Cocoa Butter, Pero Like, Worth It, and Unsolved to name a few!  These properties and their Creators reach over 134M people a month through articles, lists, videos, animations, quizzes, podcasts, original series, newsletters and more.

The Role

BuzzFeed News is hiring a Deputy Inequality Editor to help shape and guide our inequality coverage and manage some of the team's journalists.

The job will require you to work with reporters on the inequality desk to develop story ideas, advise them through reporting strategies, and elevate their drafts by polishing prose and sharpening framing. This desk is a mix of beat reporting and enterprise reporting, and you should be able to help reporters connect their beats to the news cycle, and move quickly on fast breaking issues.

The team's goal each day is to produce revelatory, accountability-focused journalism through rigorous reporting, creative angles, and vivid narratives, with an eye toward attaining real world impact — changing laws and policies, shaping public discourse, exposing wrongdoers. Central to the desk’s focus are the systemic forces that drive inequality in all forms, including in health care treatment and police enforcement, access to credit and housing, opportunities for wealth and education, among other lanes. With reporters based across the US, as well as in South Asia and Latin America, the team’s coverage is global in scope, aiming to explore how the decisions of powerful people and institutions ripple across communities, widening disparities.  Working closely with the inequality desk editor, the deputy editor will play a critical role in determining how to take the desk’s reporting on these issues in powerful new directions.

You Will

There is no typical day here. Some days, you’ll be heads down editing a draft, or spending hours on the phone talking with a reporter about ledes, nutgrafs, and structure. Other days, you’ll be strategizing how to get a reluctant source to talk or hand over crucial documents, game-planning fast-moving news coverage with a reporter in the field, or coordinating collaborative projects with other teams. And though your editing duties will be your priority, you will be welcome to report and write your own stories when time allows.

You Have

You should have several years experience in journalism, with a record of working on breaking news, enterprise coverage, investigative reporting, or feature writing. You should have a clear vision for identifying ideas that can make a tangible impact and a deep understanding of how to craft stories to reach a wide audience. You should value having a diversity of voices across stories and carry a deep interest in exposing the ways inequities are woven into the world around us.  You should bring thoughts about how BuzzFeed's inequality coverage should look, with ideas for specific angles and the big picture direction of the team.

You don't have to come into this role with editing or managing experience. We understand everyone has a different path to their goals in this industry. We expect this to be a job that you can grow into, and BuzzFeed News will provide support in your development as a story editor, manager, and newsroom leader.

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
