The Role: 

If you are infuriated by (seemingly) intentionally obfuscated content and you read enough books in a year to impress Maria Popova, Newsela’s ELA team could be a good fit for you. As an Editor for the ELA product of Newsela, you will be responsible for helping lead and communicate an editorial vision for one of the most promising learning products in the K-12 education space. You will also get to coach a team of junior editors, and scale the team. This position is first and foremost an experienced editor. You are also a leader, a manager of projects, people and content workstreams at Newsela. Your goal is to collaboratively envision and execute on creating the world-class ELA content K-12 classrooms across the U.S. need. We value authentic content that creates opportunities for teachers to be culturally responsive, encourages students to think critically, and explains complex concepts with ease.

This role allows you to brainstorm with other senior leaders around new content streams, and the ways Newsela’s ELA content will shape the way students learn how to write, read and interpret nonfiction, fiction and poetry around the U.S. Your work will directly contribute to ensuring educators are equipped with the content and tools necessary to deliver representative, culturally responsive instruction, and in turn help deepen the impact of our mission to make reading accessible and engaging for all learners. 

Why We’ll Love You: 

You have 8+ years of demonstrated editorial management experience focused on longform fiction, poetry or nonfiction. You may have a writing or editing specialization or may be a jack of all trades. Either way, your passion for learning and education will help us transform our already enormous archive of ELA content to cover more ground, make it more inclusive, more accurate and fair. While not a requirement to have previous K-12 education experience, you understand the ELA education landscape enough to be able to build an editorial vision within it, and you’re capable of digesting business information and breaking it down for the team with an editorial lens  You leverage your attention to detail and editorial judgement to deliver thoughtful, well-balanced content that serves the needs of K-12 students. Your interpersonal skills are unmatched and you can discuss and debate editorial decisions with ease, helping us make thoughtful and clear judgment calls. You’re also well-versed in leading and growing an editorial team, and have successfully mentored your team to constantly enhance writing and reporting quality.
