Editorial Assistant, Social Studies
The Role
The Assistant Editor is the foundation of daily leveling production at Newsela. You will load, edit, and source stories and images, working closely with freelancers and staff members on the Content Team to produce dozens of high-quality stories each week. As the Assistant Editor of Social Studies Content, you will lead the charge in delivering accurate and engaging social studies content to Newsela’s K-12 readers. In addition to general editorial support (editing, selecting photos, and assessing potential content partners), you will oversee training and feedback for social studies freelancers, maintaining Newsela’s social studies glossary and guidelines, and ensuring scientific concepts are appropriately broken down for different reading levels.
Why You’ll Love This Role
Social studies can be hard to connect to the present and in some ways, inaccessible to students who do not feel represented in history, but Newsela is here to change that. Leveraging your love of social studies, you will have the opportunity to curate content that demonstrates how fun and fascinating social studies can truly be for ALL students. You will help guide our contributors in building a content library that is engaging, accurate, and accessible.
Why We’ll Love You
You’ve put your Journalism, English, or other relevant degree to good use with at least one year of experience working at a newspaper, magazine, or digital publication and have a strong knowledge of AP Style. You’ve got some social studies background and might even have a specialty within economics, U.S. history, ancient civilizations, government or politics but you also have a spidey-sense for when a topic you’re less familiar with might be oversimplified or might require some additional fact-checking or research. You are social studies-savvy enough to identify common misconceptions or scientific inaccuracies (e.g. socialism being conflated with Communism), yet aren’t so bogged down in semantics that you couldn't explain scarcity to a 3rd grader. Communication is your strong suit; you can effectively deliver feedback, drive teams to a deadline, and use your keen editorial eye to produce high quality content across a variety of subjects.
