The Role

The Engineering Writer joins our Engineering organization to develop and implement cross functional documentation standardization, using relevant industry standards. You are successful by partnering closely with our engineering community to ensure progress towards our vision of promoting organizational change initiatives, understanding team values and creating a culture of continuous feedback and iterative improvement.  You are also well versed, and comfortable, flexibly navigating ambiguity. The ideal candidate will be pragmatic, highly proactive with a strong sense of urgency and superb follow-through. 

You will:

  • Author internal engineering-facing documentation independently and/or in collaboration with Technical Product Owners, Architects or Engineers
  • Develop and implement technical documentation standards across various delivery mediums, including, but not limited to, Confluence, Jira, GitHub, Lucidchart, Google Docs 
  • Partner to understand key business objectives, product and engineering developments and other business enhancements. Consistently translate and prioritize these into the technical writing roadmap
  • Collaborate closely with go-to-market technical content writers to ensure consistency with customer-facing documentation and to incorporate voice of the customer into the engineering development life cycle
  • Maintain existing documentation as changes are introduced to existing products/processes
  • Edit content written by Technical Product Owners, Architects or Engineers
  • Partner with Learning & Development Manager on training materials necessary to foster growth within our engineering community
  • Surface and manage risks and dependencies

Your Skills:

  • At least 4 years creating, modifying and reviewing technical documentation (e.g. user guides, training materials, wiki content, etc) for a dynamic Product or Engineering organization
  • You have publicly available technical writing samples
  • Proven track record planning, implementing and maintaining technical writing programs with regional and global development
  • Demonstrated comfort with remote communication culture. Can facilitate effectively with distributed teams
  • Exhibited ability to make independent decisions. Works well with ambiguity and is naturally inclined to drive clarity
  • Energetic and enthusiastic, with the innate ability to build rapport easily 

Nice to have:

  • Strong fluency reading and writing in at least 2 programming languages. (e.g. Python, Go, bash)
  • Experience with infrastructure products or distributed systems
  • Understand the SaaS products end-to-end (e.g. API design, business logic, critical user journey)
  • Experience gathering and analyzing business & functional requirements across multiple stakeholders to deliver solutions that meet critical business needs

    • Traffic load balancing, filtering, and DDoS mitigation tools
    • Messaging, persistent DB and caching systems
  • Other technologies and integrations include:
    • Linux, Ansible, Docker & other container platforms
    • BGP, BPF/IPTables, SDN, packet analysis
    • MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ, SQL
    • Python (Twisted), Bash, C, C++14, React, Redux, D3
    • Hadoop/HDFS/OpenTSDB, Grafana, Bosun
    • Integrations with third party SaaS, APIs, and libraries, various Open Source projects including REST API clients and integrations
