BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed is the world’s leading tech-powered, diversified media company that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally through its cross-platform news and entertainment network. The company produces articles, lists, quizzes, videos, and original series; lifestyle content through brands including Tasty, the world’s largest social food network; original reporting and investigative journalism through BuzzFeed News and HuffPost; an industry-leading affiliate business, strategic partnerships, licensing and product development through BuzzFeed Commerce; and original productions across broadcast, cable, SVOD, film and digital platforms for BuzzFeed Studios.

The Role

We are hiring a reporter on BuzzFeed News’ Social News team, which is part of the Breaking news team. Social news coverage is part of the DNA of BuzzFeed News. We pride ourselves on our original reporting about what people are talking about online, telling the stories behind the trends, memes, and viral moments across our timelines. We view the internet as an institution and treat influencers seriously, as businesses — and we take big swings at holding them to account. Our coverage is accurate, relevant, smart, and creative — and when necessary, it can be really fun or very serious. It’s not clickbait-y or cringey; it doesn’t meet quotas.

Our team breaks stories and brings readers the most fascinating online conversations about race, power, money, culture, and humor. We want a reporter to report on the internet’s myriad and diverse audiences and greatly encourage coverage of BIPOC online communities (for example, one of our reporters focuses on Muslim TikTok and another on Black creators). Tell us where you live online and what's interesting.

You Will

The role involves brainstorming story ideas; managing sources; and interviewing, researching, reporting, and writing daily articles and investigations. You will be publishing stories regularly. You will find stories on a wide range of social news platforms — don’t just think about TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram, but also Clubhouse, Peloton, and Pinterest, for starters. You should be engaged with multiple communities online. You will be constantly thinking of the social news angle for the biggest news of the moment and should be able to execute it quickly while also balancing more in-depth, longer features. You won’t be too highbrow about internet trends and conversations.

This role features a Tuesday to Saturday schedule. The location is flexible — you can work from our New York City newsroom with the Social News editor once we return to the office or remotely, but you will be required to work during Eastern Time hours.

On Saturdays, you will be the only reporter on duty and will be expected to work alongside a Breaking News editor to cover the stories of the day, which could range from diving into a viral video or reporting on breaking events. If this is not currently your strong suit but you want to learn how to do this type of reporting, we will train you.

You Have

You have at least a few years experience in journalism, with a record of publishing stories on a regular basis. Your past journalism experience does not have to be focused on social news, but you should be internet obsessed.

You have a demonstrated ability to cultivate sources and tell stories in ways that reach the widest possible audience. You are skeptical about viral scams and clout chasing. You are passionate about emerging platforms and what makes something go viral.

You should be an ambitious writer who is hungry to learn, willing to hit the phones, and able to pivot from one topic to another without hesitation. You should be a willing and generous collaborator. You should have a great sense of humor.

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
