BuzzFeed News’s ambitious global investigations team is looking for an experienced, versatile editor to handle all aspects of major investigative projects — from complex story edits to fast-moving developments, from helping reporters through stressful situations to planning complex approaches to hard reporting targets. The investigations editor will collaborate with other editors on the team to manage our terrific reporters in offices across the US and in the UK; helping to conceive, assign, guide, edit, and publish the boldest, highest-value investigations possible — and then to keep drumming away to guarantee we get maximum impact.

You should:

• Have a proven record of running major investigative projects that successfully held people or institutions accountable, with at least five years’ experience in journalism and at least two years’ experience as an editor.

• Be equally comfortable doing a root-and-branch edit of a complex, yearslong investigation, and working at high-speed on some of the most competitive stories in the world.

• Be expert at honing incandescent writing and powerful narrative.

• Have experience line-managing reporters.

• Play well with others, including fellow editors.

• Show a record of thinking globally.

• Demonstrate a mastery of every aspect of the investigative process, from sniffing out where the bodies are buried to handling sensitive documents and vulnerable sources, guiding difficult ethical decisions, and bulletproofing stories so effectively that aggressive lawyers looking to sue just slump in despair.

• Be interested in new kinds of investigative projects and forms for the social web.

• Most of all, know how to inspire, strategize with, and edit some of the most accomplished investigative journalists anywhere.

In addition, a sense of adventure helps, because we are a madly fast-moving company that is figuring things out on the run — and having a blast doing it. Experience in national security, business, or politics reporting or editing is a plus. And the most important character trait is absolute integrity.
