ABOUT THE TEAM AND ROLE
theSkimm is looking to hire a Junior Writer for its editorial team. theSkimm's editorial team is a collaborative group of journalists from traditional media backgrounds, and we understand how to write high-quality journalism in theSkimm's distinct voice. We're looking for a news junkie who will work closely with the SkimmNews web team to research, write, fact-check, and create new articles for the news vertical on web and in the app. This position would report to the Senior Editor of theSkimm.com . 
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

• Build articles for the web and app
• Write short and long form pieces covering the latest news for SkimmNews
• Write events and curate the app's homescreen
• Write and curate homepage for theSkimm's app
• Write news articles and large-scale campaigns for theSkimm.com
• Work on special projects and/or long-form content, including researching, writing, editing, fact-checking, and publishing

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• A minimum of 2-3 years of traditional or digital newsroom experience
• Experience working in CMS
• Experience working in a breaking news environment
• Excellent writing and editorial judgment
• Experience with research and fact-checking 
• Track record of working effectively under pressure to hit deadlines
• Comfortable working non-traditional hours 
• Passion for theSkimm and its mission, and the ability to write in theSkimm's voice
• The ability to be a self-starter and a team player
• Bachelor's degree

This is a full-time role with flexibility for remote work. Our office is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our employees are working remotely. We are aiming to re-open our beautiful office in January 2022. When we do return, our workforce will be a hybrid model, meaning we will have employees in the office as well as employees working from home. We're still finalizing exactly what that will look like!
We will require vaccinations for anyone coming to our office. We are following CDC recommendations for any additional boosters, and will always follow CDC and NY state guidance on wearing masks in the office.
