Motion Graphics Artist for VICE on HBO Weekly Series

Overview:
VICE on HBO is seeking a 2D-3D motion designer-animator to join our award-winning news and documentary team. Successful candidates will be comfortable prioritizing requests for projects in various stages of post, and should enjoy solving creative challenges.
The animator will be primarily responsible for building 2D data-driven news graphs, explainers, and maps; as well as occasional 3D object or process diagrams that convey scientific developments. The majority of the job is building original graphics in After Effects that cannot be produced with our existing templates. Ideal candidates will be extremely comfortable working with producers, self-driven, and able to execute innovative, stylistically consistent graphics that address a wide range of topics. The environment is demanding and fastpaced; and the team is extremely supportive, diverse, and talented.
The position also involves extensive communication with producers regarding data and news developments, some direction of assistant editors who use the templated tools, use of custom tools that assist with revision and rendering, and the opportunity to improve existing graphics workflows. Producers are responsible for providing accurate data and information, as well as signing off on the finished product for ethical and legal accuracy. Typical deliverables are broadcast legal texted and textless renders as well as project files and associated assets. Some flexibility with hours is acceptable based on the workload and delivery schedule, however we expect that the position is M-F 9:30-7:30.
About the show:
The award-winning weekly international documentary series is starting its sixth season airs weekly on HBO, and is produced in at VICE HQ in Williamsburg. The show is produced within the VICE News department, and supported by a large team of storytellers. Each episode is comprised of two 15-minute cinematic docs that engage with topics including climate change, conflict, scientific developments, geopolitical developments, and cultural interest stories among others. The role of graphics in the show is primarily a storytelling tool, meant to maximize the audience's engagement with complex concepts or data sets within an immersive and polished story. We expect to produce 60+ of these 15-minute segments in the coming year.
Desired skills and qualities:
3+ years of experience with broadcast or documentary graphics
Some newsroom experience
Expert command of After Effects and Photoshop
Familiarity with 3DS Max or Maya for occasional modeling
Experience with scripting, expressions, and automation
Experience using Geolayers, Viz, or compositing tools is a plus
Self-driven, curious, and detail-oriented personality
