BuzzFeed News is hiring a National Editor to oversee our government and politics teams, which have about 15 reporters and editors combined. This editor will guide our unique reporting on political campaigns, the White House, government agencies, Congress, and the areas where politics, culture, and the internet converge. The National Editor will be a newsroom leader, helping to shape BuzzFeed News overall, and will report directly to the Editor-in-Chief.

If you’re an editor who wants to hold the powerful accountable, land searing scoops of fact and idea, and help craft pieces with newsy narratives and graceful language, vet articles with steely rigor — essentially, publish explosive journalism that stands out and beats the competition — then this is the job for you.

The candidate will have deft news judgment, deciding on a day-to-day basis what needs coverage and what doesn’t, and helping reporters dominate their beats while simultaneously reporting out bombshell enterprise stories. Critically, the person needs to show a commitment to centering under-reported communities and voices, and to helping journalists build a diverse base of sources. We are committed to diversity in the people we write about, the audience we serve, and the talented people we call our colleagues.

The politics and government desks have reporters in DC, New York, and Ohio. This person can be based in DC, New York, LA, or possibly even other cities — but when we can travel again, the person would have to spend time in DC regularly.

This candidate will have at least 7 years experience as a reporter and/or editor covering government and/or politics, with a proven track record of covering their intersection with race in America. Editing and managing experience is not mandatory, but very strongly encouraged.

As a member of the news leadership team, this editor will be involved in newsroom-wide decisions, including discussions about tough journalism and management calls. And we have a lot of fun, so a sense of humor doesn’t hurt.

To Apply

Please submit a resume, cover letter, and three stories you’ve edited, explaining how you edited them. If you have not edited, submit three stories you’ve written. Some applicants may be asked to write a memo responding to several questions and to take an edit test.

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
