BuzzFeed

BuzzFeed is the world’s leading tech-powered, diversified media company that reaches hundreds of millions of people globally through its cross-platform news and entertainment network. The company produces articles, lists, quizzes, videos, and original series; lifestyle content through brands including Tasty, the world’s largest social food network; original reporting and investigative journalism through BuzzFeed News and HuffPost; an industry-leading affiliate business, strategic partnerships, licensing and product development through BuzzFeed Commerce; and original productions across broadcast, cable, SVOD, film and digital platforms for BuzzFeed Studios.

The Role

BuzzFeed News, a Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom, is hiring a reporter to cover race and civil rights for its Inequality Desk.

The job will require you to dig into how America’s fundamental fault line shapes policies and laws, impacts peoples’ lives, and fuels the ongoing effort to uphold the caste system in place since the country’s birth. While racism is an age-old problem, you will find stories that shed new light on how forms of discrimination change with the times through rigorous and timely investigations into the people and institutions perpetuating oppression, vivid narratives about the ground-shaking events of our moment, and sharply framed two- or three-day news articles that break through the crowded field. You will include voices that have not traditionally been heard, and most critically, you will find and expose those who have been causing harm.

The Inequality Desk’s goal is to produce journalism that makes real-world impact — changing laws, shifting public discourse, holding powerful people accountable for wrongdoing. Achieving those aims often means finding and writing stories that reach a wide audience by revealing new facts that people can’t turn away from

You Will

BuzzFeed News’s Inequality Desk values reporters who pitch stories rather than await assignments. You will steer the conversation around the issues you write about.

Working closely with your editors you will dig up stories no one else is telling, and report them out. You will conceive long-term and short-term story ideas with clear and compelling angles. You will leap into big news events, finding the angle on which you are the expert. We will help you rigorously button up your work, so that it is unassailable. One benefit of working here is that we will provide you ample runway for deep investigative and enterprise work.

You will report to our Inequality Editor who is based in New York City, though members of the team are based across the country and around the world. The reporter’s location is negotiable.

You Have

You should have at least a few years experience in journalism, with a record of working on breaking news, enterprise coverage, investigative reporting, or feature writing. You should have an ability to cultivate sources and tell stories in ways that reach the widest possible audience. You should be a persistent reporter with strong writing skills and an eye for how stories on the ground fit into wider patterns. You should value having a diversity of voices across stories and carry a deep interest in exposing the ways inequities are woven into the world around us. You should be a willing and generous collaborator

All job applications must be received through the official BuzzFeed Jobs board (https://www.buzzfeed.com/about/jobs), including referrals. It is BuzzFeed's practice to not schedule job interviews until after an application is submitted through our jobs board.
