Job Description
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Organizational Assessment, the Data Analyst is responsible for data collection, formatting, reporting, analysis, and visualization of data pertaining to Queens Public Library’s services, programs, and population demographics.
Queens Public Library is one of the largest and busiest public library systems in the United States, dedicated to serving the most ethnically and culturally diverse area in the country. With a presence in nearly every neighborhood across the borough of Queens, the Library consists of 66 locations, including branch libraries, a Central Library, adult learning centers, a technology lab at the Queensbridge public housing complex, a community learning center at the Ravenswood public housing complex, teen centers, bookmobiles, and book bicycles.
The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable in transforming large and complex datasets into actionable insights and visualizations. The candidate will also have experience in data manipulation, analysis, and dashboard development, with abilities to communicate statistical findings to a non-technical audience. This position will contribute to QPL’s culture of data-driven planning and decision-making. Performs other duties as assigned.
Major Responsibilities
Data Collection, Analysis, Reporting, and Evaluation
- Collects, cleans, formats, and manages large datasets from multiple sources to support analysis, reporting, and evaluation related to Library services, programs, operations, and community demographics.
- Conducts statistical analyses to identify trends, patterns, and key insights from data.
- Establishes and maintains dataflow connections between Power BI and existing data systems. Improves and automates data collection, integration, and reporting processes. Maintain code scripts and document data automation workflows.
- Responds to internal and external requests for analyses, including work related to Library operations, demographically targeted services, and community needs.
- Collects, analyzes, correlates, and visualizes Census data and other publicly available datasets, including NYC Open Data, to support planning and decision-making across QPL’s service areas and communities.
- Supports broader assessment and reporting efforts by preparing required Federal, State, and Local reports and data summaries. Assists in survey development, analysis of findings, evaluation frameworks, and research on best practices of other library systems.
Data Presentation, Visualization, and Training
- Develops dashboards, maps, presentations, and reports that contextualize data, trends, and findings in clear, engaging, and visually effective ways.
- Presents findings to a range of audiences, translating technical information into accessible insights that support decision-making.
- Provides technical assistance (webinars, instructional sessions, etc.) to help staff access, interpret, and use dashboards and maps, strengthening organizational capacity to work with data effectively.
- Creates user-facing documentation and training materials, including data dictionaries, standard operating procedures, tutorials, and user guides, to support consistent use of data tools and resources.
- Responds to additional data visualization and presentation requests in support of departmental and organizational needs.
Required Education, Certifications And Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- 1-2 years’ experience with data collection, data wrangling, analysis, reporting, and visualization, including the ability to interpret data and communicate insights clearly and accurately.
- Experience with statistical software, methods, and analysis, with the ability to learn tools such as R.
- 1-2 years’ experience creating dashboards and visually compelling data visualizations using tools such as Power BI. Knowledge of effective visual design principles, with the ability to apply them to data visualizations and presentations.
- Familiarity with Census data and other publicly available data sources, including NYC Open Data.
- Familiarity with mapping platforms such as ArcGIS Online or QGIS.
- Ability to leverage AI tools to improve the efficiency and quality of data collection, analysis, and visualization workflows.
- Knowledge of or familiarity with library services and programs a plus.
- Familiarity with the NYC landscape, including first-hand knowledge of issues impacting NYC residents.

This is a non-union position. The starting annual salary range is $65,000.00 - $75,000.00. The Queens Public Library is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
