Job Description

Have a background in computational science/engineering research and want to help enable and advance groundbreaking computational research in the frontline of the fight to cure cancer? If so, our Advanced Computing group is seeking a Scientific Computing engineer to join us! As a Technical Leader you will engage and support the academic and research scientists in research projects potentially involving multiple external organizations. Our group is committed to building collaborative environments in which the best software engineering practices are valued, and to sharing and applying cross-disciplinary computational techniques in new and emerging areas. In this position, you will contribute an integral member of a multifaceted research team and will work with world-renounced scientists passionate about groundbreaking experimental cancer research and new ways to advance the understanding and eradication of cancer. The incumbent will serve as the interface to several ongoing projects to envision a ‘digital twin’ model at MSK. This work will involve multiple partners across the institution working together to build a new platform that will allow new and innovative ways to use digital models to make scientific discoveries and also improve patient health care delivery.

 

You will also work with the most notable scientists in their areas and have the pleasure and satisfaction of listening and play an active role in their work. Actively participate in understanding and interpreting their most recent technologies demand as they’ve moved into more and more digital formats for their work. Solve the technical challenges of working with new types of data and enabling scientists to do their work more accurately and rapidly will advance the way we understand and ultimately treat cancer.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Work with scientists to support their technology needs of lab technology, high performance computing, storage, backups and more.
  • Apply cutting edge technical solutions to tackle problems in basic research and in support of cancer research.
  • Understand and analyze requirements and user stories and translate them to actionable solutions.
  • Experience working within a Linux environment executing scientific workflows.
  • Coordinate the work of HPC systems administrators and define the technical requirements.
  • Work with HPC management and digits leadership to bridge the gap between the scientists and the IT engineers to facilitate groundbreaking research driven by computational resources. 
  • Implement analytical workflows on Unix and Linux systems (commercial and scientific).
  • Provide solutions including software engineering and development work including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Study and share knowledge of current and future software development tools and techniques and create or implement open-source software tools.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a scientific/engineering computer technology track or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience working within a scientific setting, specifically within or peripheral to bioinformatics, health informatics, high performance computing and/or research computing. Working with genomics is a plus as is any experience on any other big-data platforms.
  • Experience working within a Linux environment executing scientific workflows.
  • Knowledge of HPC schedulers (e.g. LSF, Slurm, PBS) and scripting languages (bash, perl) is a plus.
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases is also a plus.
  • Truly enthusiastic for collaborating with software and system engineers, informaticists, physicians, and scientists.
  • Can work independently and learn systems beyond area of comfort knowledge.
  • Communicate effectively with a diverse user base having varied levels of technical proficiencies.
  • Ability to make strategic and thoughtful recommendations to positively impact projects.
  • Outstanding creative, oral and written communication skills.
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment.
