Data Engineer
ABOUT THE TEAM AND ROLE
We're looking for a data engineer to join theSkimm's Tech team. Our mission is to enable our partners across theSkimm, from Editorial and Audio to Marketing and Advertising, to achieve their goals with the best systems and processes we can offer. We build tools throughout the stack, share knowledge across departments, and learn quickly so we can take best advantage of what's coming.
As we grow, we're looking for a data engineer who also has an interest in data science who will help solidify and expand our pipelines, maintain our data warehouse, and work on data science products such as personalization. Our business is run on detailed analysis of how our products perform with our members, which features they love and which can be improved, and which product and marketing campaigns are bringing in the best quality users. You'll be responsible for working alongside analysts, product, marketing, and other teams to define new data collection components and measurement schemes that support each new product and feature.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics or other quantitative area or related field
- You have 3+ years of relevant professional work experience
- You enjoy working with dynamic programming languages, relational databases, and distributed systems. Our platforms are ever evolving, but currently a combination of Python, Postgres, Kubernetes, Kafka, and Redshift
- Familiarity with ETL/ELT paradigms and creating pipelines for large datasets
- Experience working stakeholders and team members to understand and finalize their business requirements for reporting and data products
- Participate in architectural decisions across the organization, particularly with respect to the impact on data collection
- Knowledge of a variety of measurement beacons, SDKs, APIs including Google Analytics, Amplitude, Braze, Stripe, email service providers
WHAT WOULD SET YOU APART
- Familiarity with Dev Ops and deployment tooling (eg, Docker, Terraform, CircleCI, etc.)
- Experience working in digital media or advertising
- Instrumented logging and alerting metrics using statsd, prometheus, grafana or similar

This is a full-time role with flexibility for remote work. Our office is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our employees are working remotely. We are aiming to re-open our beautiful office in January 2022. When we do return, our workforce will be a hybrid model, meaning we will have employees in the office as well as employees working from home. We're still finalizing exactly what that will look like!
We will require vaccinations for anyone coming to our office. We are following CDC recommendations for any additional boosters, and will always follow CDC and NY state guidance on wearing masks in the office.
