At Petal, we're looking for people with kindness, positivity, and integrity. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and potential will stand out—and set you apart—especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns. At Petal, we welcome diverse perspectives from people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions.

The Head of Analytics role
Data is the fuel that enables us to serve our customers better. It helps us design better products, grow our portfolio more profitability, acquire more customers and manage our operations more efficiently. In the credit card space, data is vast, derived from dozens of sources, and continuously changing.
But data alone doesn’t provide signal and can lead to misinterpretations and errors in the wrong hands. That’s why, at Petal, we’re launching a search for a highly-experienced Director of Analytics from the credit card industry to join our talented and mission-driven team. The ideal candidate has a successful track record of growing and overseeing an Analytics function in consumer credit, has organized and managed team members, and has the ability to imbue a fast-moving startup culture with an appreciation and reliance on good, clean data.
This role reports up into the CFO and will manage a growing team of analysts and consultants that are partially dedicated to individual functions throughout the company.
Key responsibilities:
- Work closely with internal and external functions further up the data funnel -- Data Engineering, Data Science, external data providers -- to ensure that the Analytics team and its functional stakeholders have organized, efficiently structured, and accurate data data
- Develop data-driven insights to drive operational and product-level strategies. This includes developing regular reports for functional stakeholders, both proactively and by request
- Organize complex information in an easy-to-understand, thematic manner and educate the full Petal team on key metrics, indicators, and foster an environment where data is regularly applied and used to make decisions
- Partner with functional leaders to maintain and supplement an analytical framework with clear, agreed-upon definitions; this should become the ‘source of truth’ we draw on to make decisions
- Explore and propose new ways to apply and use data that support product and business ideas
- Lead, organize, and deploy the Analytics team members; this includes fostering their development, assigning them motivating work, ensuring high engagement and productivity
- Provide overall direction to the development of advanced analytic solutions and strategies, driving the team, projects, and processes; propose and validate analytical tools and new data sources to improve accuracy, timeliness, and our ability to succeed in the credit/financial services space
Characteristics of a successful candidate
- 7+ years of highly quantitative experience turning data into business insights in financial services, including several years experience in an analytically-heavy function at a major credit card issuer
- B.A./Masters in math, statistics, engineering, or other quantitative-focused field
- Strong commercial acumen and a ‘nose’ for the right data drivers underlying business decisions; flawless attention to detail
- Experience collaborating with product, capital markets, operations, marketing, and risk in a consumer lending technology company
- Track record of building and mentoring a high-performing Analytics team
- Command of SAS, SQL, R, Python, or other programming languages; knack for data visualization through BI tools like Periscope and Looker
- Executive presence and an ability to bring together a variety of teams to deliver against key strategies
- Proven success in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial, ambiguous environment
