The Petal mission

Petal’s mission is to bring financial opportunity and innovation to everyone.

We're pioneering a new approach to credit, enabling Petal Card* applicants to leverage their banking history, in addition to their credit history, to establish their creditworthiness. Our proprietary Cash Scoring technology takes applicants’ income, spending, and savings into account and is helping traditionally underserved consumers across the United States access honest, simple and responsible credit, even if they’ve never had it before.

We bring the same ingenuity to Petal Card products. Our simple and intuitive app gives members access to credit score tracking, budgeting tools, subscription management, and automated payment options—everything they need to make financial progress.

Now more than ever, Americans need help improving their credit safely, responsibly, and affordably. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, apply now, and let’s change this trillion-dollar industry together.

At Petal, we're looking for people with kindness, positivity, and integrity. You're encouraged to apply even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and potential will stand out—and set you apart—especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns. At Petal, we welcome diverse perspectives from people who think rigorously and aren't afraid to challenge assumptions.

The Head of Analytics role

Data is the fuel that enables us to serve our customers better. It helps us design better products, grow our portfolio more profitability, acquire more customers and manage our operations more efficiently. In the credit card space, data is vast, derived from dozens of sources, and continuously changing.

But data alone doesn’t provide signal and can lead to misinterpretations and errors in the wrong hands. That’s why, at Petal, we’re launching a search for a highly-experienced Director of Analytics from the credit card industry to join our talented and mission-driven team. The ideal candidate has a successful track record of growing and overseeing an Analytics function in consumer credit, has organized and managed team members, and has the ability to imbue a fast-moving startup culture with an appreciation and reliance on good, clean data.

This role reports up into the CFO and will manage a growing team of analysts and consultants that are partially dedicated to individual functions throughout the company.

Key responsibilities:

  • Work closely with internal and external functions further up the data funnel -- Data Engineering, Data Science, external data providers -- to ensure that the Analytics team and its functional stakeholders have organized, efficiently structured, and accurate data data
  • Develop data-driven insights to drive operational and product-level strategies. This includes developing regular reports for functional stakeholders, both proactively and by request
  • Organize complex information in an easy-to-understand, thematic manner and educate the full Petal team on key metrics, indicators, and foster an environment where data is regularly applied and used to make decisions
  • Partner with functional leaders to maintain and supplement an analytical framework with clear, agreed-upon definitions; this should become the ‘source of truth’ we draw on to make decisions
  • Explore and propose new ways to apply and use data that support product and business ideas
  • Lead, organize, and deploy the Analytics team members; this includes fostering their development, assigning them motivating work, ensuring high engagement and productivity
  • Provide overall direction to the development of advanced analytic solutions and strategies, driving the team, projects, and processes; propose and validate analytical tools and new data sources to improve accuracy, timeliness, and our ability to succeed in the credit/financial services space

Characteristics of a successful candidate

  • 7+ years of highly quantitative experience turning data into business insights in financial services, including several years experience in an analytically-heavy function at a major credit card issuer
  • B.A./Masters in math, statistics, engineering, or other quantitative-focused field
  • Strong commercial acumen and a ‘nose’ for the right data drivers underlying business decisions; flawless attention to detail
  • Experience collaborating with product, capital markets, operations, marketing, and risk in a consumer lending technology company
  • Track record of building and mentoring a high-performing Analytics team
  • Command of SAS, SQL, R, Python, or other programming languages; knack for data visualization through BI tools like Periscope and Looker
  • Executive presence and an ability to bring together a variety of teams to deliver against key strategies
  • Proven success in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial, ambiguous environment

An Insider's view of Petal

What's something quirky about your company?

At Petal we celebrate our big wins with an unlikely pairing of Popeyes and Prosecco. The origin story remains a mystery — but if we accomplish something really big you can bet that delicious fried chicken and bubbles are on the horizon.

Liza

Talent, Senior Manager

What's the biggest problem your team is solving?

On the Payments team, we're working to increase the speed of payments processing for our members. This way we can deliver a real-time experience, reduce the likelihood of payment reversals, and allow faster access to a member's available credit.

Rohini

Senior Product Manager II

How has your career grown since starting at the company?

I started at Petal as a Credit Ops Analyst. Since then, I’ve had the chance to learn from industry experts, contribute to other sectors of the company, and further pursue my passions. I now have the privilege of leading the department where I got my start. Petal has allowed me to zero in on my purpose and continues to advocate for my development.

Allen

Risk Ops Manager

How do you make yourself accessible to the rest of the team?

Being accessible means that folks have multiple channels to engage with me & contribute ideas, give feedback, influence direction, & seek information. A few channels I use include office hours, monthly AMA's, Tech town halls, & ad-hoc check-ins. It means listening actively, assuming positive intent, asking constructive questions, & trusting others.

John

VP Engineering

How do you collaborate with other teams in the company?

As a PM, I work on delivering an engaging and frictionless app experience for users as they progress on their credit building journey. One of my favorite aspects of Petal’s culture is the egoless, team-first atmosphere that allows Petalians across functions ranging from Compliance to Design to make great things happen for our users together.
