POSITION OVERVIEW:

As the Director, Data Engineering you will play a vital role in leading the team which delivers key data features and capabilities to our Safety Platform. You will be the daily manager responsible for the project delivery and growth of the Data Engineering Team. This includes leading ETL pipeline development, productionizing data science algorithms, and innovating data platform capability to accommodate massive customer growth. As a member of the Data Team, you will have access to a massive dataset of IoT sensor data capable of improving workplace safety and the lives of the Industrial Athletes™ we serve.

In this role, you will be highly collaborative - with our Analytics Team, Product Team, R&D Team, and other engineering teams, and will report directly to the CTO. The desire to manage others, lead hiring processes, and work with a diverse group of teams is crucial to succeeding in this role.

The ideal candidate for this position has experience managing data engineers, and has a strong background in a variety of data engineering systems including streaming systems, ETL, and data warehousing. This individual will enjoy building and optimizing highly technical big data systems, keeping up with the latest tools and techniques, and collaborating with a small and growing team. We are looking for a self-starter who has the desire to be the go-to person for data engineering in a fast-growing start-up making a tangible difference on working people’s lives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leading a team of Data Engineers to deliver technical projects in agile engineering environment
  • Collaborating with leaders from across the company in accomplishing business objectives, including regular planning cycles and in creating a data engineering roadmap
  • Manage the Data Engineering Team’s delivery and growth, including hiring, coaching, technical reviews, and project prioritization with other Directors and PMs throughout the company
  • Drive the design, building, and launching of new data models and data pipelines in production
  • Ensure StrongArm remains at the cutting edge in implementing effective data-related tools and pipelines at scale
  • Partner with the Data Science team to investigate and implement advanced statistical models and machine learning pipelines
  • Work with data analysts to productionize queries and data in data warehouses, data lakes, and OLAP systems
  • Develop systems and technology to manage and reduce compute spend across our systems

KEY REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 7+ years experience in data engineering, with emphasis on large scale big data environments
  • Proven experience as daily manager for other engineers, and in leading successful hiring processes
  • Experience developing with any combination of cloud computing platforms (AWS, GCP), cloud based data warehouses (Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery), BI Tools, OLAP systems (Clickhouse, Druid) and scheduling solutions (Airflow)
  • Experience contributing to roadmap and strategy discussions across multiple teams
  • Passion for staying on top of tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community
  • Experience with distributed data streaming frameworks like Spark Structured Streaming, Apache Flink, Kafka, etc
  • Advanced Experience with RDBMS and SQL
  • Experience with automated testing for distributed systems in Spark (unit testing, end to end testing, QA, CI/CD)
  • Experience working directly with Data Scientists to productionize experimental algorithms
