ABOUT THE TEAM AND ROLE

theSkimm’s Data & Analytics team provides robust measurement and actionable insights on our growing membership base. We partner closely with product, engineering, editorial, sales, and marketing teams to build innovative products, understand customer demand signals, and measure growth and engagement. 

As our company grows, we’re looking for a Director of Data Science (Personalization) to join our team. Reporting to theSkimm’s VP of Data & Analytics, you will be building the foundations for personalization and building out this function from the ground up. This is an exciting opportunity to own and lead an entirely new data product that serves our millions of dedicated Skimm’rs. 

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Build the data infrastructure for our personalization engine; from data collection and classification to production
  • Provide rigorous technical oversight and eventually build a team of high-performing data scientists
  • Collaborate with our finance and marketing teams to refine our attribution and LTV models, enabling high-quality decision-making within our marketing organization
  • Develop and deliver predictive models using various statistical and machine learning techniques
  • Communicate effectively across the organization, with the ability to translate the highly-technical to non-technical stakeholders and work closely with internal stakeholders to execute on our business objectives and product vision
  • Conceptualize key metrics to measure success and identify levers to move key metrics
  • Design and conduct A/B testing on our mobile and web applications
  • Segment our Skimmr’s to understand their different motivations and use cases along with our ability to fulfill those needs and add meaningful value
  • Build dashboards for all levels of the company, including executive leadership, to monitor key metrics and track progress
  • Identify, collect, and transform data from disparate sources using SQL, R, Python, or other statistical tools
  • Develop a sound understanding of the role of each product within theSkimm’s ecosystem of products

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent practical experience) in Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or Mathematics, or related quantitative discipline
  • 7+ years of experience in data analytics or similar quantitative role with track record of business impact
  • Solid understanding of relational database structures and data engineering principles
  • Experience with personalization engines or similar predictive models
  • Experience with large datasets, statistical analyses, data visualization
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong Python and SQL background and knowledge of any other statistical languages
  • Proficiency with business intelligence tools (e.g, Looker, Tableau)
  • Understanding of user segmentation, cohort analyses, regression models, funnel optimization
  • Familiarity and enthusiasm for theSkimm: a passion for our audience and mission
  • High EQ
