The Role:

The Lead Technical Business Intelligence (BI) will mentor business intelligence engineers to cultivate an environment where our BI teams are inspired to do their best work. With your direction, your teams will own Newsela’s business intelligence and reporting capabilities. You will provide architectural guidance and establish operational excellence among our teams that service our internal analytics and reporting needs. Reporting to the Vice President of Data Systems, you will work in partnership with cross-functional leaders to ensure our teammates are well supported and unobstructed in pursuit of their goals. You will also be the leading voice of your domain and resourceful to stakeholders throughout the organization.

Why You'll Love This Role:

Each student is deserving of the opportunity to learn and advance regardless of unique learning preferences. We work hard to make sure these opportunities exist. This role is foundational in delivering a platform that educators and students rely on each day. And because we’re a technology company focused on improving the way students learn, you’ll be part of a technology culture that values teaching, learning, and questioning. You’ll continue to build our culture of learning by providing close mentorship to your team of specialists as needed, and regular one-on-one’s, all to ensure you’re growing your team’s technical skills and interests. You’ll get to work closely with our leaders to deliver high quality applications at scale, execute high level engineering strategy, and provide career guidance to your team. You will also inherit best of breed tools such as Snowflake and Looker, along with highly skilled teams that love the value they bring to the company.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have 8+ years of experience working with creating reporting and analytics solutions from significant quantities of structured and/or unstructured data, and ideally 3+ years of experience managing or leading a software development team of 5+ engineers. You have a background in business intelligence and reporting, and have worked in a data-centric SaaS organization. You understand contemporary reporting and analytics techniques for capturing and reporting arbitrary metrics. You have strong experience in at least two BI platforms; preferably Looker as one of them. You are proficient in SQL and have a good understanding of Dimensional Modeling. You and your team(s) deliver high quality work on-time or ahead of schedule, when possible. As a leader who is empathetic to the needs of BI developers and engineers, you foster a culture where team members can be fully engaged and creatively solve problems to the benefit of our internal stakeholders.
