The Role:

As a product-focused Data Analyst, you will serve as a strategic partner to Newsela’s Content Product teams, helping them better architect a data-based content strategy to drive teacher and student engagement. You will apply your expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and data presentation to see beyond the numbers and understand how users interact with our product, which will in turn inform future product development decisions. You will partner closely with product leadership to define, measure, and report on core product and feature metrics. In your day-to-day you will also collaborate with Data and Business Intelligence team members to develop reports and visualization dashboards, understand collection and content goals, define metrics of engagement, and deliver insights and reporting to understand the root causes of changes in metrics that drive user engagement.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

Reporting to a Lead Data Scientist, you will be joining the Data team at a pivotal moment in its growth (we’re poised to double in size over the next year). Your work will help build the foundation for a product that transforms education and reading engagement. Using rigorous analysis across an expansive breadth of user behavior data and previously unexamined data, your work will help the Content, Product, and Data teams better define Newsela’s content engagement strategy. You will get to design and evaluate experiments, and build key data sets to empower operational and exploratory analysis. Your work will also be a key driver in determining future content that makes its way to students in 90% of schools nationwide.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have 2+ years experience in querying databases (SQL), leveraging a scripting language (R/Python) to analyze data, and/or using Looker (or other BI tools) to deliver repeatable insights. You have a strong quantitative background, with demonstrated ability to set metrics, gauge product success, and translate insight into effective recommendations for stakeholders across several disciplines. You love diving into the nitty-gritty of data, but never lose sight of the big picture. You ideally have an understanding of different statistical modeling techniques, preferably with experience running A/B tests. You may even have some experience in content or media (a plus, not required).
