The Role:

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be a key senior team member responsible for helping make very efficient and effective data pipelines using AWS services, Python, Snowflake, and orchestration engines like Prefect/Airflow. Collaborating with other data team members and managers, you will develop an intimate knowledge of our databases and work with our data warehousing and Looker developers, and other stakeholders across the company. You will ingest sets of raw data from APIs, databases, and event-streams, and deliver accurate, timely, and complete transformed datasets. You’ll design and architect insightful, concise data engineering solutions to drive the most informed, effective decisions for our business strategy. You’ll also help guide and mentor other data engineers and bring in best development processes and practices to the team, including code reviews, QA processes, documentation, formal release process, etc.

Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will get to work with leaders across Newsela and directly inform them with reliable insights via data processing. Your source datasets will be generated as a result of teacher and student usage of Newsela products. You’ll be working alongside data analysts and data scientists, who are investigating and answering strategic questions that will impact the marketing strategy. Ultimately, your work will drive meaningful enhancements to the learning and teaching experience for students and teachers across the U.S. and help improve the future of K-12 education. Why We’ll Love You:

You have 7+ years experience in solving  complex data engineering problems with demonstrated strong analytical skills to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy. You are proficient in Snowflake, SQL,  Python, AWS services, consuming and building API services, command-line tools, PREFECT (similar to Airflow) orchestration engine, shell scripting, drone.io or other modern CI/CD platform, and other tools and technologies. Your Python, SQL, Prefect/Airflow skills have helped you ingest data from any/all kinds of sources and transform and deliver it effortlessly as data marts, wide tables, or any other form helpful to the downstream consumers. You’re able to improve organizational performance through the application of original thinking to existing and emerging data methods and processes. In addition to your technical skills, you are a clear and proactive communicator, ​​able to work cross-functionally to effectively gather requirements, reduce errors, and address communication gaps between teams.
