Your New Role...
Machine Learning Engineering, Senior Manager, CNN Data Intelligence
We build machine learning powered recommendation, search, and classification tools used across CNN's platforms and experience. This year we have already launched two new products- "Watch Next", a video recommendation experience, and "Related Articles", an article recommendation feed.
We are looking for a Senior Manager to help us scale how we experiment, build, and collaborate on machine learning and personalization driven products. Our portfolio spans recommendation use cases based on user affinity (Your CNN, a feed of recommended recent articles), combinations of user affinity and item similarity (in-article recommendation), all of the above plus trending signals (Watch Next, recommending videos in the viewing UX), and also classification (what is this article about, anyway?) and search. In all of these areas, we aim to drive product strategy by performing our own full-stack experimentation as well as collaborating with other product teams to utilize our machine learning capabilities in service of their roadmap.
Here's some of the problems you'll be helping us solve:
- The news cycle moves fast. What can we learn from readers' engagement with breaking news to recommend articles or videos which deepen their understanding?
- How can we create a virtuous recommender system which drives diversity in people's reading habits?
- What's the best way for a machine learning group to work closely with journalists and editors to keep our audience engaged and informed?
- There are no shortage of modeling approaches which could work for news recommendation, but many have only been vetted in other domains (movies, music, etc). How can we improve our offline evaluation to find the needles in the haystack, and when we do, how can we quickly vet them in an online experiment?
Your Role Accountabilities...
- Work with a team of machine learning and software engineers as a servant leader to remove obstacles, drive delivery, improve ML fundamentals and practices, and help the team delight CNN users with machine learning driven features.
- Be accountable for delivery, engineering excellence, roadmap creation and communication for a team.
- Work individually with machine learning engineers to guide their career growth and help them improve as engineers and as collaborators
- Collaborate with other leaders in data intelligence and stakeholder product groups across CNN to drive group-level alignment, improvements, and culture
- Represent machine learning at CNN internally to help other groups understand where ML can help solve problems, and where simpler approaches can be tried first
- Collaborate with our machine learning leadership peers in Warner Bros Discovery to share best practices, evolve towards a shared vision of machine learning practice and culture, and explore opportunities for sharing technology, platforms, and capabilities.
Qualifications & Experience...
- You have experience guiding and collaborating with some mix of machine learning engineers, software engineers (backend, data, full-stack), mobile engineers and product stakeholders.
- You have hands-on domain expertise in machine learning- you've worked as part of a team to ship ML products hands on, and have chosen to move into management.
- You understand the constraints of working with a growing team and thrive in an environment that is fast-paced and sometimes scrappy.
- You can drive progress and improvement on multiple team projects simultaneously.
- You have a deep curiosity and are proactive in seeking innovative solutions to technical, organizational, interpersonal, and business problems.
- You are highly communicative with your reports, stakeholders, and collaborators.
- You have worked closely with a product partner/owner/collaborator to shape team backlogs.
- You are keen on keeping up with the state of the art in machine learning science and research, and pragmatic in combining that with older proven approaches to problem solving in our domain.
- How to recruit, motivate, and challenge great people
- How to guide a team through challenging technical decisions or unstick those who are stuck
- How to align your team's work and priorities with incoming group or company level priorities (such as OKRs) and produce longer-term roadmaps
- How to guide a team through evaluation and selection of different modeling approaches
- How to apply Agile methodologies to organize and distribute work within a team, start with simple solutions, and iterate to success
How We Get Things Done...
This last bit is probably the most important! Here at WBD, our guiding principles are the core values by which we operate and are central to how we get things done. You can find them at www.wbd.com/guiding-principles/ along with some insights from the team on what they mean and how they show up in their day to day. We hope they resonate with you and look forward to discussing them during your interview.
