Job Description

TECH RESEARCH LEAD 

 The Tech Incubation team aspires to stretch and transform the existing boundaries in cancer care at the confluence of tech and health. We function as a pipeline for innovation that supports bold, scientific experimentation with new technologies in a variety of breakthrough domains that helps shape MSK’s digital transformation. The team is a multidisciplinary group of designers, engineers and data scientists whose activities range from basic tech research, to proof of concept and design work, to streamlined pilots and evaluations of new technologies in production clinical and business environments. We also reach beyond institutional walls to forge collaborations with academic, startup, and established industry partners to accelerate and augment these activities. 

 

WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON? 

As Tech Research Lead, you will report to the Associate Chief Information Officer and will lead efforts to build and manage a small, specialized team to explore emerging technologies that are likely to be important to MSK's digital transformation. In a manner analogous to basic science research, tech research is the exploration of emerging technologies without hypotheses of how they might be applied to operational work. The team consists of the Associate Chief Information Officer, Business Development Lead, the Product and Design Director, the Engineering Manager, and the Data Science Lead.  ​ 

 

WHO ARE WE?  

We are an experienced multidisciplinary team that covers the full lifecycle of project development, from idea stage all the way to production ready. We operate in a product model where you will work in a team of talented software engineers, as well as data scientists and designers. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Identifying, selecting and defining breakthrough technology domains for our team to explore based on trends in tech development and the evolving needs of our cancer center during our digital transformation 
  • Standing up and running a functional space for tech research, including procuring the required equipment and materials, managing their setup and organization, and overseeing facility access and security  
  • Directing active research in the selected domains, including design and execution of experiments, collection and analysis of data, and summarization of findings and conclusions  
  • Contributing to the knowledge base maintained by the Tech Incubation team in the form of up-to-date summaries of new tech, well documented descriptions of current use cases under investigation, and giving internally and externally facing presentations to a wide range of colleagues and collaborators  
  • Managing Tech Research staff in terms of ensuring best practices, maintaining training and skills, mentoring staff for personal growth and career development  
  • Collaborating with fellow leaders in the Tech Incubation team, the greater DigITs organization, and across MSK to inform areas of exploration, share learnings, and shape the vision of digital transformation for the organization.   

 

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE 

  • Eager to influence the future of cancer care by exploring and developing new tools, tech and approaches that can enable clinicians and empower health consumers 
  • Graduate level training required in CS, Engineering or other technical fields; PhD preferred 
  • 5 years of industry experience in corporate, R&D or healthcare setting (preferred) 
  • Excellent communication and writing skills with scientific/technical publications and presentations
