Check is a payroll-as-a-service API that lets you embed payroll directly in your vertical SaaS, HR, or time-tracking platform. Our API abstracts away the complexities of running payroll: tax calculation, remittance, and filing, plus the movement of money between companies and employees. This enables companies to easily build fully integrated payroll products to offer to their customers.

Why is this important? At Check, we believe that paying people should be simple.

By building great payroll infrastructure, we unlock more value for our partners looking to build systems that cater to the specific needs of their customers. Ultimately, allowing them to effectively start, run, and scale their business from the ground up.

As a leader in the embedded payroll space, Check is continuously making strides in delivering on our mission to make paying people simple. This is where you come in—the market is ready for us and we need your help to continue telling our story to the world. We are looking for a passionate Brand Designer with experience telling compelling visual stories to join our small (but growing!) Design team in NYC, SF, or remotely.

What you’ll do:

  • Evolve, expand, and maintain Check’s visual brand system in partnership with our Design and Marketing teams
  • Collaborate with Design, Sales, Marketing, and Product to create and maintain best-in-class collateral to tell our story across multiple channels (digital, print, events, etc.)
  • Develop resources, guidelines, and templates that empower Check’s teams to create beautiful and thoughtful expressions of our brand
  • Be a source of inspiration to our org as you evolve and drive our brand forward
  • Contribute to and grow the culture of the design team and drive initiatives to increase our brand’s influence internally and externally

What we’re looking for:

  • Have 5+ years of experience of relevant design and art direction experience (ideally, for product-driven companies)
  • Great systems thinker—you are great at uncovering patterns and opportunities to efficiently evolve design systems while successfully driving and managing projects from ideation to final deliverable
  • Exceptional editorial skills—you are a hands-on maker and as the gatekeeper of our brand: you have a strong eye for good typography / page layout, and comfortable with the use of color, imagery, and creation of distinct graphic devices to build inspirational brand collateral
  • Strong storyteller—you are persuasive and humble in explaining your work and process to internal stakeholders while having the ability to take abstract concepts and turn them into tangible and compelling stories across mediums and channel
  • A champion for design—your exceptional attention to detail and insights on current trends drives you to relentlessly advocate for design patterns that are good for our end users whether they are internal or external-facing

You should be comfortable using:

  • Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc)
  • Figma

Our team is distributed across the US, with hubs in New York City and San Francisco.

At Check, I feel supported in my career growth with a professional development budget and regular career check-ins! What is your vision for the company?

We believe in a future where business owners don’t have to think about payroll; it’ll simply be embedded in the platforms they already use to run their businesses. Check is building the infrastructure to power that future, and ultimately we believe we’ll enable thousands of new platforms, millions of businesses, and hundreds of millions of workers.

How do your team's ideas influence the company's direction?

We pride ourselves on a set of values that includes both seeking understanding ("Check Yourself") and driving the change we want to see ("Be an Owner").
