About the role:

Birchbox is seeking an inspiring, get-it-done Creative Director to lead the creative strategy through to execution of marketing campaign initiatives and brand experiences. This role requires a great storyteller that knows how to build a compelling narrative with words and visuals across different types of campaigns and in different mediums. The right candidate will live and breathe brand expression and aspire to create a brand that consumers truly love.

This role supports the Birchbox and BirchboxMan brands across our full business: subscription, online retail and offline retail.

You will manage a creative team covering marketing design (digital, print), copy, photo and video production. You will have a passion for keeping up to date with current marketing mediums such as mobile, social, brand activations; and a proven ability to build alignment across teams and to lead through influence.

Birchbox has aggressive goals of being a major, industry-changing force in beauty and grooming commerce. For Beauty we are focusing on creating a compelling experience for the Casual Beauty Consumer (the 70% of beauty consumers who are motivated by purpose rather than passion). This customer has been overlooked by the beauty industry in favor of marketing to the more obvious consumer, the beauty obsessed, so it’s critical that you are someone who shares our passion for this under-served and undervalued customer base and can help us bring the brand to life in a way that will genuinely resonate with their needs. We are looking for team members that share our passion for working hard and making waves.

This role will report the the Chief Customer Officer.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead your team to develop concepts and execute creative assets for marketing campaigns across social, paid, email, campaign landing pages, site marketing assets, event and physical retail experiences
  • Oversee packaging design for monthly subscription box, ecomm boxes, Birchbox collections (limited edition boxes, kits) and in-house brands (Arrow, LOC)
  • Mentor and inspire a team of 15+ people with 3 direct reports, covering marketing design (digital, print), copy, photo and video production
  • Collaborate with Director, Product Design & Director, Social + Content to ensure a cohesive brand expression across all creative executions for our customer experience

Creative leadership and team management

  • Elevate the brand in terms of cultural conversation and business impact
  • Inspire our customers, our brand partners and the beauty industry with breakthrough creative
  • Champion our brand values and bring them to life in execution: Smart, Confident, Human, Thoughtful, Delightful, Magical
  • Invest time in team culture and development paths for your team
  • Model exceptional management skills and teach your team how to grow as managers
  • Foster innovation and risk-taking on your team to ensure delivery of outstanding creative
  • Combine creative inspiration and insightful analytics to ensure impactful campaigns
  • Share insight into industry best practices and marketing creative trends across all mediums

Marketing creative execution

  • Translate marketing briefs into concepts; partner with business owners on concepts to ensure meets business objectives; execute from concept to final delivered asset
  • Ensure a top-performing creative team with a focus on clarity of roles, efficient workflows, iterative processes, and design reviews; committed to always improving process within the creative team and with other teams
  • Bring an ROI perspective to creative execution; knowing and guiding the team towards the right levels of effort for expected impact
  • Thrive in a resource constrained environment; making smart decisions on where to invest in high production value vs where to get ‘scrappy’; believe in a test-and-learn approach with simpler, lower effort executions to test new ideas quickly
  • Ability to execute within budget and proactively raise concerns if budget is holding back the best path forward; ability to accurately estimate costs; manage overall budget for most impact shifting as necessary across different line items

Cross-team collaboration

  • Build strong peer relationships across the company; interest in learning about how other teams contribute to Birchbox’s success
  • Work especially closely with the leads of: Performance Marketing (paid, email, onsite marketing assets, partnerships), Social + Content (social content, onsite content), PR (events), Retail (SoHo store signage and styling), Product Design (cohesion in brand expression, photo and copy requests), Merchandising (packaging for kits and in house brands), Operations (print budgets and vendors), People & Culture (office branding and decor)
  • Be a source of inspiration for all of the teams that help create the birchbox brand experience; excel at influence, in additional to direct oversight, given that many teams at Birchbox contribute to the brand experience

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in in-house marketing and/or agency positions; prefer some in-house experience
  • Background in branding and digital marketing, interest in marketing strategy
  • Portfolio of original and breakthrough work showing a sophisticated sense of brand expression
  • Solid knowledge of the requirements of the creative process including typical timelines, budgets, and resources needed to efficiently produce quality work on time, and to specification
  • Experience managing and developing a large team with both junior and senior team members
  • Clear communication skills with ability to articulate the thinking behind creative concepts
  • Excellent conceptual and problem-solving skills
  • Well organized, detail and solutions oriented
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • A digital native in your personal life
