Product Designer (NYC)
DonorsChoose engages the public in public schools by giving people a simple, accountable, and personal way to address educational inequity. In this clip, board member Stephen Colbert tells the organization's story.
Since its launch in 2000, more than 4 million "citizen philanthropists" have donated to classroom projects on DonorsChoose, channeling books, field trips, technology, and other resources to more than 37 million students in public schools, overwhelmingly from low-income households. Along the way, the organization helped to pioneer the field of crowdfunding and is now making an impact beyond school supplies.
The Role
DonorsChoose is looking for a well-rounded product designer to join our high-performing product and engineering team. As our Product Designer, you will be responsible for executing clear, thoughtful design solutions for our website, developing new features, and continuing to push DonorsChoose as an innovator in the crowdfunding space. Your work will encompass the entire product development lifecycle: from defining the work by listening to our users and analyzing metrics, ideating and prototyping potential solutions, getting into the codebase to help build the thing, shipping, and then analyzing its performance and iterating as needed.
Qualifications
This position might be a fit for you if you have:
- 5+ years of experience designing products for web (mobile and desktop)
- Strong front-end coding chops (HTML, CSS, JS)
- Excellent self-management skills and an ability to work independently
- An eagerness to solve hard problems and learn new things
- An appreciation for data and user research that informs your design decisions
- An eye for detail
- Strong communication skills and can share your design process clearly
- The ability to simplify complexity
- Strong beliefs, but loosely held — you can advocate for your point of view, but are open to having your mind changed
- A passion for education, equity, or social good
