The Role:

The Senior VIsual UI Designer will create compelling, easy, and joyful experiences that support the individual needs of every Newsela student and teacher. Reporting to the VP of Product Design, you will partner closely with team members across Product Management, Product Design, Research, Engineering, Data, Content, and Marketing. You’ll leverage your understanding of our user archetypes to inform design decisions that will deliver in-flight features and experiences that effectively solve user problems. Your designs will be well organized, emotionally resonate with users, showcase our content without getting in the way, and will support users achieving their product goals. You will also partner cross-functionally to plan, conduct, and analyze customer research and user testing to test and evolve design solutions.

Why You’ll Love This Role:

Exceptional education products have never been more important or crucially needed. The designs you create will directly impact the learning and teaching experience of tens of millions of users across the U.S. Your work will enable teachers and students nationwide to discover and use the most relevant, engaging content in a timely, efficient manner, which will ultimately help drive higher engagement with Newsela’s learning content and better learning outcomes. You will have the opportunity to help shape the future of K-12 education by designing and delivering delightful, engaging, intuitive product experiences.

Why We’ll Love You:

You have an exceptional design portfolio that reflects shipped and currently-in-market digital products with rich functionality. You have 4+ years of relevant, consumer-facing product design experience including the following: creating beautiful, world-class designs that are engaging, visually delightful, well organized, and emotionally resonate with users; designing within an established overall visual brand and extending that visual brand system; effectively communicating your designs and underlying thinking through comprehensive documentation (presentations, flows, high polish designs); rapidly creating prototypes at various levels of fidelity; planning, conducting, and analyzing customer research and user testing; using research results and performance data to drive your design decisions; working collaboratively in a dynamic, cross-functional team.

You empathize deeply with the customer and fiercely advocate from their perspective. You identify and clearly articulate customer and design problems, then always propose a range of thoughtful and creative solutions. You have a deep expertise in all facets of visual design: typography, color, grid/layout, hierarchy of information. You use color to create energy, warmth, visual depth, and to highlight underlying relationships in the content. You know when to apply pixel-perfect attention to detail, and when broad stroke sketches are more appropriate to speed progress. You have a strong understanding of current Visual/UI best practices and expertise using industry standard design tools. You approach visual design holistically, ensuring consistency of reusable patterns across the product experience. You execute visual designs based on a strong understanding of web and mobile-web platform technology. You are thoughtful, imaginative, curious, and set high standards for yourself. You are autonomous and take responsibility for every last detail, from conception to launch.
