The Opportunity:

Shutterstock is a technology company that powers one of the world’s largest marketplaces for high-quality photos, illustrations, videos and music used by businesses, marketing agencies and media organizations of all sizes.

Shutterstock is made up of independent thinkers, technologists, and designers – working collaboratively to do compelling work, create cool stuff, and inspire each other. In the process, we’re building sophisticated tools to help the world experience images, footage, and music in a more beautiful way.

Because we are a digital business, the Shutterstock Product Design team designs the business and all the customer and contributor experiences. We are responsive and know what our customers are doing and what platform they’re doing it on. We think globally and advocate for the individual. That means quantitative, qualitative and analytical research. It also means lots of collaboration with product owners and developers. And because we’re agile, we are quick on our feet and know how to iterate. But most of all we are compassionate - we want to solve problems and solve them with integrity.

As a Product Designer Manager, you’ll be an important design leader at Shutterstock guiding teams to reach their full potential while also leading design decisions that support the customer, business, and technology. You'll be collaborating closely with designers, product owners, and engineers across the organization, connecting teams and driving best practices.

Responsibilities:

The Product Design Manager, UX & Design Ops will manage a team of designers and help scale the Shutterstock Design System across the business to drive design and engineering efficiencies and consistency throughout the Shutterstock platform

  • Oversee the development, execution, and improvement of user experience and product design strategy across the end-to-end customer and contributor journeys
  • Evolve the Design Ops strategy for Shutterstock by improving processes and helping to train designers and cross-functional teams to evangelize the Shutterstock Design System across the organization
  • Help drive our operational design strategy, owning and evolving a holistic design process
  • Serve as the voice of the customer and act as a customer experience advocate when considering design decisions that will impact both customers and contributors
  • Contributes UX and Design thought-leadership to a highly collaborative team of UX, product, and engineering with a focus on converting strong conceptual thinking and product strategy to impactful and intuitive experiences
  • Close partnership with marketing and brand teams to ensure strong visual design and consistent brand expression across all consumer touchpoints
  • Apply and further develop your experience in developing new approaches to design based on industry best practices, including agile and lean product development methodologies
  • Embrace A/B testing as a methodology to understand what design and interactions work best toward acquiring more customers/contributors and retaining them
  • Recruit and develop extraordinary talent, by coaching, managing and mentoring teams of designers

Requirements:

  • 5 + years of experience leading and managing teams of designers with strong domain expertise across career
  • Degree in Design or Art; Visual Design, Interaction Design, Industrial Design, Motion, Architecture, Urban Planning, Graphic Design, HCI, or related field of study (or work experience in lieu of degree)
  • Mastery of design tools (Sketch, Abstract, Adobe Suite, Prototyping)
  • Experience with front-end coding for web and/or mobile apps (JavaScript/CSS/HTML, React JS, etc.), ability to prototype in code a big plus
  • Proven track record of shipping delightful products. E-commerce is a plus.
  • You have a design aesthetic. Your documents are simple, informative and filled with value. There is an attention to detail that borders on neurotic.
  • You are comfortable working in the Agile methodology and side-by-side with developers on a daily basis
  • Ability to influence peers and managers to build consensus
  • You listen well and have excellent speaking and writing skills and can articulate your decision and design process
  • You are respectful when challenging assumptions and give and receive feedback with equal grace
