Director, Developer Relations

We are looking for a strong leader with a deep technical background to lead Developer Relations at DigitalOcean. Reporting to the VP of Product and Programs Marketing, the Director of Developer Relations will guide a team of talented Developer Advocates to deliver on our goals of evangelizing DigitalOcean products to our target audience of developers, small technology teams, entrepreneurs, and startups.
This is a highly visible role and has the potential to shape the technical storytelling around the DigitalOcean platform.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Lead a talented group of technical individuals focusing on creating content for developers and engaging with the developer community through first and third party engagement avenues
- Be a public and visible face of the DigitalOcean Developer Advocacy team firmly attached to our product portfolio and our company narrative.
- Develop a holistic plan to delight and grow the community of developers that are building on our platform
- Partner with the product and engineering teams:
- To understand various product capabilities and target customer scenarios to prioritize areas for content production
- To provide feedback from the community
- To identify gaps in documentation
- Partner with the marketing team:
- To help support go-to-market strategies around products through differentiated content, code samples, and collateral
- To help initiatives around customer growth, expansion, and retention by improving the customer experience at different stages of a customer journey - through content and engagement.
- Ensure the team works on the highest impact activities through deep prioritization based on understanding business needs, customer preferences, and industry trends
- Partner with the community engagement team to create a roadmap of exciting developer and startup-focused industry events and other engagements for the team to participate in and represent DigitalOcean.
- Ensure senior leadership and key stakeholders are informed and aligned on developer relations strategy and impact in our community through clearly defined metrics
What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean:
We want a technologist with a business hat. Someone who has:
- 10+ years of experience in a technical capacity (developer, DevOps, SRE, developer advocate, etc.)
- 5+ years of experience as a leader of a technical group or DevRel team
- Deep expertise in developer advocacy and community engagement
- A keen understanding of the international developer ecosystem beyond T-shirts, swag, and IDE dark mode
- A willingness and ability to stay connected to the trends and happenings in the cloud platforms space
- Technical depth to explain complex concepts to the following constituents: developers, senior product and engineering leaders, and junior developer advocates
- Ability to connect the dots and think about how we should align developer advocacy activities with business goals and the unique go-to-market model of DigitalOcean
- Obsessed with creating content that inspires developers to adopt our products and build
- Ability to establish relationships and build rapport to influence decisions at all levels
- Degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent experience
- Excels in verbal and written communication; good listener with a strong collaborative attitude
