Your Impact:

Handshake is hiring a Director of Engineering reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering on the Employer team.

In this role, you will be managing the team that builds all features that every employer in the United States is using to hire excellent, diverse early talent. Not only will you be a key leader in driving Handshake’s mission by influencing employers to find top early talent through Handshake’s far-reaching talent network, but you will also be responsible for ultimately building the products that drive Handshake’s primary revenue source.

You will also have opportunities to:

  • Work on complex technical challenges and enable millions of job seekers to connect with employers through Handshake’s platform.

  • Grow and scale a rapidly growing diverse team by hiring top talent

  • Own a 30+ engineering organization by defining its culture, processes, and operating model, while heavily influencing the broader Engineering culture

Your Role:

  • Directly manage a team of Engineering Managers by defining their career development plans, setting specific goals, and motivating them to achieve results as part of their growth

  • Manage a 30+ person engineering organization by empowering your leaders to build effective, high-functioning teams.

  • Hire a diverse group of managers and engineers in Handshake’s rapidly growing environment while structurally evolving the Employer Engineering organization for excellent execution and efficiency.

  • Partner closely with key leaders across Handshake, including Design, Product Management, and Customer Support, to define the vision and strategy for the Employer product

  • Participate in technical decisions and provide technical coaching, helping tech leads to define and prioritize an engineering roadmap.

  • Represent the Employer Engineering team’s needs at the Engineering leadership level while helping to role out processes and programs across all of Engineering as we scale.

  • Lead with empathy as you help us nurture a culture of growth, inclusion, and belonging.

Your Experience:

  • Experience in managing other managers.

  • Proven track record of being able to lead multi-team Engineering organizations by leading through and influencing the leaders that report to you.

  • Understanding of how to build strong, diverse teams.

  • Background in software engineering and experience with web application platforms

  • Ability to understand the team’s overall technical challenges and architecture while quickly being able to understand technical details when diving deeper into problems.

  • Work cross-functionally with product managers, designers, and other engineering managers

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Excellent people management skills, focusing on supporting empowerment

  • Ability to provide strategic direction to Product, Engineering, and Design to shape the vision of the product.

  • Passion for helping teams and individuals grow, and for building an inclusive culture and diverse team

Bonus Areas of Expertise: 

  • Experience in fast-growth environments

  • Experience in the recruitment software industry, multi-marketplace products, or general enterprise software

Compensation Range:

$211,500 - 235,000
