As an Engineering Director at Alfred, you’ll be responsible for leading a skilled and growing team of engineers. You’ll work with Product, Design, and Operations to build the software that sits at the intersection between technology and the real world.  It’s your job to develop, hire, nurture, and build the people who make that intersection better.

As the leader of a growing team, you’ll be responsible for the technology choices, data architecture, and scalability of our platform. You will advance our engineering philosophy and practices to lead the construction of a new type of service. Alfred offers the opportunity to work closely with all aspects of a multi-sided business: our operations team, our customers and—the stars of the show—the Alfred Home Managers.

How you’ll contribute to #OneTeam

  • Lead goal setting, planning, and drive business impact of engineering groups
  • Produce and deliver a strategic, technical vision identifying gaps in ownership and negotiating who’ll own them going forward
  • Build and grow an amazing diverse engineering organization with a strong culture of balancing excellence with agility 
  • Serve as a coach, mentor, and advocate for the managers and engineers in the group - leveraging one on ones (1:1), standards, and an eye towards future opportunities to support their growth
  • Scale the organization by investing and growing a strong bench of senior technical leaders and managers within the team
  • Ensure the right people are in the right job through creating leadership opportunities, hiring, performance management, and generally caring about the team
  • Work with engineering leaders as well as cross functional leads (including product, marketing, data,  and design) to create and execute on product roadmaps
  • Work closely with other engineering leaders to evolve and continually improve Alfred’s engineering culture 
  • Plan and project manage across engineering sprints
  • Address obstacles proactively so the team maintains a predictable and sustainable pace
  • Advise on architecture decisions
  • Lead code and architecture reviews

Who you are 

  • 3+ years of experience in managing managers, 5+ years of engineering management experience, and 10+ years of engineering experience
  • Experience in building and maturing-distributed engineering teams across three countries and several timezones and infrastructure in a startup environment
  • Strong analytical skills and a sense of ownership/accountability
  • Experience in building teams, hiring, coaching, mentoring, and motivating staff through learning and development with a 
  • Proven track record of recruiting both managers and engineers
  • Comfortable collaborating with groups outside of engineering and translating high-level business objectives into technical strategy
  • Ability to balance business needs, a sense of urgency, and shipping high quality and pragmatic solutions
  • Experience in Internet and mobile platforms - web based technology and mobile development (iOS/Android)
  • Exceptional project planning/execution skills including estimating, scheduling, and executing on committed schedules
  • Demonstrated experience in building, delivering and operating products and services in a consumer-centric space
  • Strong verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

Location

Two blocks up from Battery Park, Alfred is no more than a ten-minute walk to water south, east, and west. Our office is easy to get to with many subway lines, ferries, and the PATH within a short walk.
